About Jaén

Jaén is a provincial capital in the north of Andalusia, in southern Spain, set on the slopes of the Sierra de Jabalcuz and surrounded by olive groves. The city had 112,235 registered residents on 1 January 2025, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE). It is a medium-sized, mostly Spanish-speaking city with a compact centre around its Renaissance cathedral.

Students choose Jaén for its public university, its lower cost compared with large cities and an everyday life in Spanish with few tourists. It suits international students who want full immersion, as well as Erasmus students looking for a campus university in a manageable city.

Studying in Jaén

Our directory lists four active schools in Jaén: three universities and other higher-education centres, and one primary and secondary school. The largest is the Universidad de Jaén (UJA), a public university created by an Andalusian law of 1 July 1993; according to the university, its roots go back to the early modern Universidad de Baeza. It has two campuses: Las Lagunillas, in Jaén, and the science and technology campus in Linares. Its centres include faculties of Health Sciences, Experimental Sciences, Social and Legal Sciences, Humanities and Education, and Social Work, plus engineering schools (Escuela Politécnica Superior) in Jaén and Linares.

For Spanish, the university's Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Lenguas Modernas (CEALM) runs Spanish courses for international students and is an exam venue for the DELE, SIELE and CCSE. Jaén also has two public higher arts schools:

  • the Conservatorio Superior de Música "Andrés de Vandelvira", with higher music studies that include the speciality Producción y Gestión (music production and management) and an Erasmus+ programme
  • the Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño "José Nogué", with higher studies in Graphic Design, advanced vocational programmes (ciclos de grado superior) such as Photography and Illustration, and an Erasmus+ charter

Families moving with young children can look at Jaén Montessori International School, a Montessori school with an English immersion programme, which is in eligibility status with the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Most university degrees in Jaén are taught in Spanish, so check the language of instruction and the required Spanish level before you apply.

Cost of living for students

Jaén is generally cheaper than Spain's large university cities, and rent is the main expense. The university's own services and its student associations are a good starting point for finding shared flats or a residence; compare what is included (bills, internet, meals) before signing.

City buses are inexpensive. With fares in force from 1 January 2026, a single ticket costs €1 on Jaén's urban buses. With the card of the Jaén transport consortium, each trip costs €0.67, or €0.54 with the Spanish government subsidy. Holders of the city council's student card (Tarjeta Estudiante) pay €0.48 per trip, or €0.38 with the subsidy, according to the city's urban transport website.

Getting around and daily life

The historic centre is walkable, though steep in places, and urban buses link it with the Las Lagunillas campus and the newer districts. The nearest airport is Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén, which serves both provinces and lies 17 km from the centre of Granada, according to Aena. Buses connect Jaén with Granada, Córdoba and the rest of Andalusia, and Renfe runs trains between Madrid Puerta de Atocha - Almudena Grandes and Jaén's railway station.

Jaén lies at 580 metres and has hot, dry summers and cool winters. At the AEMET Jaén station (normals for 1983-2010), the average temperature is 8.6 °C in January and 27.6 °C in July, when average highs reach 33.7 °C. Rain falls mostly from autumn to spring, with December the wettest month (75 mm on average); July is almost dry. Plan for heat in early autumn and late spring, and bring warm clothes for winter evenings.
