Communication as a field of study covers journalism, audiovisual communication (film, television and video), advertising and public relations, and corporate and digital communication. Madrid offers it at every level, from official bachelor's degrees and vocational training to master's programmes and short skills courses for professionals.

How the studies are organised

At university, the usual official degrees are the grados in Periodismo (journalism), Comunicación Audiovisual and Publicidad y Relaciones Públicas. Spanish grados generally have 240 ECTS credits, or four years, and official master's degrees (másteres universitarios) 60, 90 or 120 credits. Universities also award their own qualifications, such as the Máster de Formación Permanente, which are not official degrees. In vocational training (FP), the Imagen y Sonido family includes higher-level cycles in Realización de Proyectos Audiovisuales y Espectáculos, Producción de Audiovisuales y Espectáculos, Sonido para Audiovisuales y Espectáculos and Iluminación, Captación y Tratamiento de Imagen; Marketing y Publicidad belongs to the Comercio y Marketing family.

Where to study Communication in Madrid

  • Universidad Villanueva: its official grados in Periodismo and in Publicidad y Relaciones Públicas are listed in RUCT under the current regulations (RD 822/2021); its Comunicación Audiovisual degree is being phased out. It also offers a Máster de Formación Permanente in sports journalism.
  • CES, Escuela Superior de Imagen, Sonido y Tecnología: teaches official higher-level FP in the Imagen y Sonido family. Its Realización de Proyectos Audiovisuales y Espectáculos cycle lasts two years (120 ECTS), with 25% of the time spent training in companies, and has a dual option run with Mediaset España.
  • ESERP Business School: teaches the higher-level FP in Marketing y Publicidad in Madrid (2,000 hours, including 500 hours of company placements), leading to the official Técnico Superior title issued by the Comunidad de Madrid.

Admission and recognition

Students who completed secondary school abroad usually apply for a grado through UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses international students' records and runs the tests needed to enter Spanish bachelor's degrees. FP can also lead on to university: according to ESERP, students moving from its Marketing y Publicidad cycle to its bachelor's in Advertising, Marketing and Public Relations can have 45 ECTS credits recognised. For a master's with a foreign degree, the declaración de equivalencia certifies the academic level; homologación is only needed to practise a regulated profession.
