Granada, a university city of 235,294 inhabitants in eastern Andalusia (2025, Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography), has a wide choice of Spanish schools. Thirteen centres in the city appear in the Instituto Cervantes list of accredited centres, and students can choose between the university's language centre, private schools in the Albaicín and the city centre, and the public official language school.

Most schools in this list teach Spanish to foreign students. A few, such as inlingua Granada and Atlas School, mainly teach English to local residents, and organisations such as CELEI and Educatrip design study abroad programmes for groups.

What the language schools offer

The Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM) of the Universidad de Granada runs intensive Spanish courses (CILE), the Curso de Estudios Hispánicos (CEH), held in autumn and spring, and the Curso de Lengua y Cultura Españolas (CLCE). Students who complete ten subjects can obtain the Diploma de Estudios Hispánicos, and exams are open only to students who have attended at least 80% of the course hours.

Private schools usually start new groups every week and add exam preparation and culture. Some examples:

  • Escuela Montalbán, teaching since 1986 and accredited by the Instituto Cervantes since 2002: intensive courses with a maximum of 10 students per group, DELE and SIELE preparation, and long courses for students who need a type D study visa
  • Escuela Carmen de las Cuevas: semi-intensive, intensive and super-intensive Spanish, individual classes and courses in flamenco dance and flamenco guitar
  • Instituto Mediterráneo Sol (iNMSOL): intensive and combined courses and preparation for the DELE and SIELE
  • Castila, in the Albaicín: classes of at most six students, courses with ECTS credits for university students and a junior campus

Delengua and Linguaschools Granada are also accredited by the Instituto Cervantes. The DELE diplomas that many students prepare for are official qualifications that certify a student's level of Spanish.

For residents, the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Granada is a public school with a department of Spanish as a foreign language. Applications for places are made from 1 to 20 May, students must be at least 16 in the year the course starts, and the school also runs official certification exams.

Schools arrange accommodation too. Escuela Montalbán, for example, offers homestays with breakfast, half board or full board and rooms in school flats shared with other students.
