Accounting Studies in Canada

Basilica Mary Queen of the World, Montreal, Quebec, CanadaStudying Accounting in Canada offers far more than just a top-notch education at a highly-rated university, it provides an opportunity to visit a country that’s as vast as it is beautiful and diverse as it is friendly.  Located in the far north of the North American continent, Canada consists of ten provinces and three territories, and extends lengthwise from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west.  It is the second largest country in the world by total area, and shares the longest land border in the world with the United States of America, its neighbor to the south.  The country has a population of roughly 35 million, one of the largest economies in the world and is consistently ranked near the top in terms of world countries for its amazingly high standard of living.

Accounting Education in Canada

The higher education system in Canada is respected globally for its quality and the number of highly-trained graduates it produces.  Universities here are on par with some of the best institutions in the world, including those found in the United Kingdom and the United States.  Accounting education is certainly no exception to this rule, and is offered as a degree program by most of the country’s major institutions of higher learning, including the University of Toronto.
The undergraduate accounting degree program at the University of Toronto is offered jointly by the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Rotman School of Management.  The program offers an innovative and integrative curriculum with a global perspective for an enriched professional undergraduate experience.

The accounting stream of the program combines career courses in management and applied accounting with a wide selection of courses in the arts and sciences.  This balance ensures graduates have a solid understanding of business and modern society, along with the critical and analytical skills for effective decision-making and organizational leadership.
Students who successfully complete the undergraduate program in accounting are eligible to apply for the Master’s degree program in Management and Professional Accounting.  This program is designed to educate future leaders of the accounting profession at the master's level in management and at the professional level in accounting and related subjects.
The curriculum for the program is organized to provide students with a superior understanding of:
  • The challenges, uses and needs of management
  • Accounting, finance, auditing, and tax
  • The essential professional subjects
  • Management skills
  • Professional capabilities
Students from any undergraduate background may apply, although they may be required to sit for and pass an entrance exam prior to being admitted to the program.

Why Study Abroad in Canada

Canada is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and a wonderful place to visit.  The reasons for studying in Canada are immeasurable, and may include features such as its rich culture and history; the diversity and warmth of its people; the natural beauty of its landscapes; its tasty cuisine; and the enormity of amenities the country offers.  From its museums, libraries and galleries by day, to its bars, cafes and nightclubs by night, the country is definitely a must-see for anyone thinking of studying abroad and a true pleasure to visit at all times of the year.  Other reasons to choose Canada as your study abroad destination include:

The Cities

Canada is home to several world-class cities, and if you happen to elect to study at the University of Toronto you are in for a real treat.  The best-known city in Canada, Toronto is home to several enjoyable cultural events throughout the year, and is comparable in that sense to cities such as New York or London.  For example, tourists flock in great numbers to events such as the Toronto Film Festival and the Santa Claus Parade, the world’s largest running parade for children.  Toronto is also a hot-spot for students, as evidenced by the large number of bars and nightclubs in the city, where on weekends students can relax and blow off some steam after a long week of studying.

Niagara Falls

The most powerful waterfall on the North American continent, Niagara Falls, located in Niagara Falls, Canada, is just 20 minutes from Buffalo, New York by car and is definitely well worth the visit.  Each year, from November until January, the falls light up and several events are held in the region, including fireworks shows, concerts and the annual Festival of Lights.

The Canadian Rock Mountains

Straddling the border between the provinces of British Columbia and Alberta, the Canadian Rocky Mountains offer some of the most breathtaking and stunning scenery in Canada—scenery that is both beautiful and serene.  These are different than the US Rocky Mountains, largely because they have been heavily influenced by glaciers.  This influence has left the mountains sharply pointed at the top, with wide valleys where the earth was gouged by the glaciers thousands of years ago.

The Viking Trail

The Viking Trail is a picturesque thematic highway that stretches from the west coast of Newfoundland to the southern Labrador.  As the trail winds along the northern coastline, visitors can behold many proud fishing communities and an abundance of migrating whales.  There are also many icebergs to view, some of which are nearly 10,000 years old.

Collectively, all of these wonderful sights and attractions, along with the thousands more just like them, make Canada the place to be for students planning to study abroad.
