About Huelva
Huelva is the capital of the westernmost province of Andalusia, close to the Portuguese border. The city lies on the Gulf of Cádiz, where the Odiel and Tinto rivers meet, almost at sea level. It had 143,774 registered residents in 2025, according to the Andalusian statistics institute (IECA), which makes it a compact, manageable city for students who prefer a quieter place than Seville or Málaga.
Students come to Huelva mainly for its public university, for Spanish courses in a city with few foreign visitors, and for its location between the Atlantic beaches of the Costa de la Luz, the Doñana area and the hills of the Sierra de Aracena. The province is also closely tied to the history of Columbus's first voyage, with La Rábida, Palos de la Frontera and Moguer near the city.
