The Libera Università di Bolzano (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, unibz) is a university in South Tyrol, northern Italy, at the crossroads of the German-speaking and Italian cultures. Its official languages are Italian, German and English, and it has five faculties and four campuses: Bozen-Bolzano city centre, Bozen-Bolzano NOI Techpark, Brixen-Bressanone and Bruneck-Brunico.

It offers more than 30 bachelor's and master's programmes in economics and business, natural and agricultural sciences, engineering, computer science, education, communication, design and the arts, as well as PhD programmes. All bachelor's programmes are trilingual (lessons and exams in Italian, German and English) and require B2 certification in at least two of the three languages; most master's programmes are taught only in English and require B2 English. Classes are held in small groups, about 16% of students are international, and the university has exchange agreements with universities in Spain, the USA, Taiwan and many other countries.

Publicly funded student halls in Bozen-Bolzano and Brixen-Bressanone cost €360 for a single room and €270 for a double room, and private halls are also available. Students can apply for income-based scholarships of €1,680 to €6,960 per year from the provincial student support office.

Admission

The application process is online: choose a programme, check the language requirements, apply, register for a language exam if needed, and after admission pay the first instalment of the tuition fees and complete enrolment in the application portal. International degree-seeking applicants follow different procedures depending on their nationality (EU/EEA citizens, non-EU citizens living abroad or in Italy, Italian citizens abroad). Some programmes have separate quotas for EU and non-EU applicants.

Language requirements

Trilingual programmes (all bachelor's and some master's) require B2-level certification in at least two of the three official languages: Italian, German and English. English-taught master's programmes require B2 English. Applicants without a certificate can register for a unibz language exam. Graduates receive a Diploma Supplement showing the language levels they have reached.

Scholarships and financial aid

Students can apply to the provincial university student support office (Ufficio per il diritto allo studio universitario) for income-based scholarships of €1,680 to €6,960 per year; scholarship holders also get their tuition fees refunded. After the first year, students with an average grade of 27/30 can apply for merit scholarships. Foreign students can also apply for scholarships from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), and the SCAAC programme supports students from countries affected by armed conflict.

Housing

Publicly funded student halls in Bozen-Bolzano and Brixen-Bressanone cost €360 for a single room and €270 for a double room; applications usually run online from mid-June to early July and places are allocated by the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano. Private halls in Bozen-Bolzano (such as Pietro Tosolini Student Residence, Ferrari Tower and HIGHFIVEBZ) manage their own admissions and rents, and rooms in flat-shares are advertised online. Each campus has a canteen. The university estimates living costs in the Bozen-Bolzano area at €800 per month or more, excluding tuition.
