About Brighton
Brighton is a seaside city on the south coast of England. Together with neighbouring Hove it forms the city of Brighton and Hove, whose population grew from around 273,400 in 2011 to around 277,100 in 2021, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) census figures. The University of Brighton describes it as a beachside city just one hour from central London.
Students come to Brighton for two main reasons: to learn English in a compact, lively city by the sea, and to take a degree at one of its higher education institutions. The city is also known for its music and arts scene, with festivals such as The Great Escape and Brighton Pride.
Studying in Brighton
Our directory lists nine schools in Brighton: six language schools, two universities and one training provider for English teachers. All teaching is in English.
The University of Brighton offers bachelor's and master's degrees, pre-master's and foundation pathways and a summer pre-sessional English course for students who need to raise their level before a degree. It also accepts study abroad students for a semester or a year. First-year international students are guaranteed an offer of a room in halls of residence if they apply by the university's deadline. BIMM University runs BIMM Music Institute Brighton, a contemporary music college with three sites across the city.
English language schools are the largest group. Examples:
- Castle School of English, a British Council accredited school a short walk from Brighton station, with a maximum of 12 students per adult class and General English, IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation
- LSI Brighton, on Portland Road, with 14 classrooms, an average class size of 11 and on-campus rooms, student residences and homestays
- Intensive School of English & Business Communication (ISE), which teaches adults and young learners
The TEFL Academy, also based in Brighton, trains people who want to teach English as a foreign language.
Visas for students
Short English courses of up to 6 months can usually be taken as a Standard Visitor, which allows study at an accredited institution, including English language courses. English courses of more than 6 and up to 11 months need a Short-term study visa (£228). Degree courses and other longer courses at a licensed sponsor need a Student visa, which costs £558 from outside the UK; students aged 18 or over on a degree-level course can usually stay for up to 5 years. Graduates can apply for a Graduate visa of 2 years if they apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months after that. Always check the current rules on GOV.UK before you apply.
Cost of living for students
Housing is the largest cost. According to the ONS, the average monthly private rent in Brighton and Hove was £1,808 in August 2026, above the South East average of £1,426, and £1,189 for a one-bedroom home. Most students therefore live in halls, a school residence, a shared house or a homestay rather than renting alone.
For a Student visa outside London, the UK government asks students to show £1,171 per month (for up to 9 months) for living costs, on top of course fees. This is a minimum for the visa, not a budget.
Getting around and daily life
Several schools are a short walk from the station and the seafront. The routes of Brighton & Hove Buses, the city's bus company, are part of the national bus fare cap in England: a single ticket costs no more than £3 until the end of 2026, and single tickets will be capped at £2 from 1 January 2027. There are direct trains to London, and the journey to central London takes about an hour.
