Pedagogy Studies in Spain

Pedagogy (Pedagogía) is the study of education as a whole: how learning is organised, planned, evaluated and supported, in schools and far beyond them. The Universidad de Sevilla describes its graduates as specialists in educational systems, programmes, projects and processes in different learning settings. In Spain it is a bachelor's degree of its own, separate from the degrees that train primary and early-years teachers, and it leads to work in guidance, training, educational management and social and cultural projects.

How the degree is organised

Under Royal Decree 822/2021, a Spanish bachelor's degree (grado) has 240 ECTS credits and an officially recognised master's degree 60, 90 or 120 credits. The Grado en Pedagogía follows this model. At the Universidad de Salamanca it takes four years of 60 credits: the first year covers basic training in pedagogy, psychology, sociology, a language and communication; the second and third years cover subjects such as education policy, curriculum design, assessment and guidance, and attention to diversity. The final year combines 30 elective credits, a 24-credit compulsory work placement and a 6-credit final project, with optional pathways in training and quality management or in educational guidance and counselling.

The Universidad de Granada's 240-credit degree includes 60 elective credits and first-year subjects such as the anthropology of education and the social and cultural history of education.

Admission, costs and recognition

Students who finished secondary school outside Spain usually apply through UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses international students' records and runs the tests needed to enter a bachelor's degree, and then apply to each university within its own deadlines. Public universities charge per credit: €12.62 at the Universidad de Sevilla, with a 99% reduction from the second year on credits passed the previous year. Sevilla offered 160 places for 2025-26 and received 1,756 applications in total. To graduate there, students must prove a foreign language at CEFR level B1.

Homologación of a foreign degree applies only to regulated professions; for other degrees, the ministry offers a declaración de equivalencia, which certifies the academic level. Students who take a Spanish degree and want to work at home should check their own country's recognition rules.

Careers

The Universidad de Sevilla lists adult and lifelong education, health and environmental education and staff selection among the fields where pedagogues work, with roles such as educational adviser, careers counsellor and corporate training specialist. The Universidad de Salamanca adds family and academic guidance, the design of educational materials, educational advice for publishers, media, museums and libraries, and quality management in education.

One route needs an extra qualification: working as a guidance counsellor or teacher in Spanish secondary schools is a regulated profession that requires the official master's degree for secondary teachers (Máster en Profesorado, 60 credits), which includes a specialisation in educational guidance (Orientación Educativa).
