Business Administration Studies in The United Kingdom

Business administration is taught in the United Kingdom under several names. At bachelor's level the usual title is Business Management, a broad degree in how organisations are run. At postgraduate level the best-known qualification is the Master of Business Administration (MBA), aimed at people who already have management experience. This directory lists 28 schools for business administration in the UK: four in London and two each in Edinburgh, Newcastle upon Tyne, Canterbury and Liverpool.

How the degree is organised

The first degree is a bachelor's degree with honours, a BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons), which is a level 6 qualification. It takes three years full time in England and Wales: Newcastle University, The University of Sheffield and Liverpool Hope University list three years for their BA Business Management, and Swansea University three years for its BSc. In Scotland, degree-level study usually takes four years.

Many courses can be extended by a year. At the University of Westminster the BA takes three or four years, because students can take an optional work placement or study abroad year between years 2 and 3. Shorter higher education qualifications also exist: a foundation degree or a higher national diploma (HND) is a level 5 qualification.

A master's degree is a level 7 qualification. The MBA differs from other master's degrees in its entry profile: the online MBA of the University of Liverpool, for example, is studied part time over approximately 30 months and requires 180 credits; candidates are expected to hold a good bachelor's degree or an equivalent professional qualification and to have at least three years of substantive managerial experience. A doctorate (PhD or DPhil) is a level 8 qualification.

Where and how to study

London examples in this directory are the University of Westminster and London South Bank University. In the north of England there are Newcastle University, the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, The University of Sheffield and Liverpool Hope University; elsewhere in England, the University of Kent in Canterbury, Bournemouth University, the University of Worcester and Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. In Scotland the list includes Glasgow Caledonian University and Aberdeen Business School at Robert Gordon University; in Wales, Swansea University.

Distance learning is common in this subject: University of Liverpool Online, for example, teaches its MBA fully online.

Accreditation

Business schools, rather than single degrees, are accredited by three international bodies: AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS. The University of Sheffield and the University of Liverpool state that their management schools hold all three, known as triple accreditation, and Newcastle University states that its business school is accredited by EQUIS.

Admission and English level

Universities and colleges set their own entry requirements, usually stated as A levels, and many accept equivalent international qualifications. UK ENIC, the official organisation for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications, issues statements that compare a foreign qualification with the UK system. The courses cited here ask for AAB at Newcastle and Sheffield, ABB to BBC at Swansea and BBC (112 UCAS tariff points) at Westminster and Worcester.

Sheffield asks for IELTS 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component; Westminster for 6.0 overall with 5.5 in each component. Undergraduate applications are sent through UCAS, with a maximum of five choices. For 2027 entry, the equal consideration date for most undergraduate courses is 13 January 2027 (18:00 UK time); for the universities of Oxford and Cambridge it is 15 October 2026. Many universities accept international applications until later in the year.

Costs and visa

Fees depend on fee status. For 2027-28, Newcastle lists first-year fees of £10,050 for home students and £25,750 for international students. International students pay £19,000 at Westminster and £21,650 at Swansea (September 2027), £17,700 a year at Worcester and £16,000 at Liverpool Hope (2027/28). The online MBA at Liverpool costs £24,634 in total at 2026/27 rates.

International students normally need a Student visa for a full degree. According to GOV.UK (checked on 8 October 2026), applicants must be 16 or over, hold an offer from a licensed student sponsor and prove English equivalent to CEFR level B2 for degree-level study. The application costs £558 from outside the UK, plus a healthcare surcharge of £776 per year for students. Applicants must also show living-cost funds of £1,529 per month for courses in London or £1,171 per month elsewhere, for up to nine months, and can apply at the earliest six months before the course starts.

Recognition and careers

Recognition of a UK qualification in another country is decided by that country. The University of Worcester names corporate management, marketing, finance, consulting and project management as career options, as well as setting up a business. After the degree, the Graduate visa allows a stay of 18 months for applications made on or after 1 January 2027.
