About Sydney

Sydney is the capital of New South Wales (NSW) and Australia's largest city. Greater Sydney had 5,231,147 inhabitants at the 2021 census, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). The city is built around its harbour on the Pacific coast and combines a large central business district (CBD) with beaches, parks and suburbs that stretch far inland.

For international students, Sydney offers both ends of the market: large universities with research faculties and many private colleges that teach English, vocational courses and pathway programmes. All teaching is in English.

Studying in Sydney

Our directory lists 14 schools in Sydney: nine English language schools and five universities and colleges. Australia's education system includes universities, vocational education and training (VET) institutes, schools and English language colleges, and Sydney has all of them. Examples from our listings:

  • UNSW Sydney (University of New South Wales) was founded in 1949. Its main campus is in Kensington, and its faculties cover Arts, Design & Architecture, Business, Engineering, Law & Justice, Medicine & Health and Science.
  • Taylors College Sydney runs pathway programmes for international students who want to study at the University of Sydney, including the University of Sydney Foundation Program, from a campus in Waterloo.
  • Holmes Institute is a private higher education provider with more than 60 years of experience and four campuses in Australia; its courses range from business and accounting to aviation, fashion and information systems.
  • Australian Pacific College offers vocational courses from certificates to graduate diplomas, with campuses in the Sydney CBD and near Manly Beach; its English courses are taught by its sister school, English Unlimited.
  • Universal English College, established in 1988, teaches General English, IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation and an Academic English Program.

Other English schools in our listings include Academy of English, Alpha English Academy, Boston Institute, Pacific English Institute, Southern English College, Sydney Metropolitan English Institute (SMEI) and UK English College. English courses for international students are called ELICOS (English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students); according to Study Australia, the government's study portal, students on these courses have the same protections as other international students.

Student visa

For a full course, most international students need a Student visa (subclass 500), which covers higher education, vocational courses and ELICOS. You enrol first and apply once the provider has issued a confirmation of enrolment (CoE). From 1 July 2026 the visa application fee is from AUD 2,500 unless you are exempt, and student visa holders may work up to 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session.

Cost of living for students

Plan your budget carefully, especially for housing. Study Australia's cost of living calculator gives a broad estimate, but its figures were last updated in November 2023; tuition fees depend on the provider, the level of study and the location.
