Commercial Management Studies in Spain

Commercial management (dirección comercial) is the management of a company's sales: sales strategy and forecasting, market research, key accounts, sales teams, channels including e-commerce, negotiation and customer relations. In Spain it sits between marketing and business administration. It can be studied as part of a bachelor's degree that combines marketing and sales, as an official master's degree, as a business school master's for working professionals, or through a higher vocational qualification.

Bachelor's degrees

Under Royal Decree 822/2021, Spanish bachelor's degrees have 240 ECTS credits and official master's degrees 60, 90 or 120; official degrees are valid throughout Spain. Commercial management usually appears in degree titles together with marketing. Examples registered in the Ministry's Register of Universities, Centres and Degrees (RUCT) include the degree in Marketing and Commercial Management (Marketing y Dirección Comercial) at the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU in Barcelona and at the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia, Commercial Management and Marketing at the Universidad Miguel Hernández de Elche, and Marketing and Commercial Management at the Universidad CEU Fernando III in Seville. Business administration (ADE) degrees also include courses in sales and marketing.

Master's degrees

Most specialisation happens at master's level. Official master's degrees in RUCT include the Máster Universitario en Dirección Comercial y Marketing at the Universidad Camilo José Cela, the Master in Commercial and Sales Management at the Universidad Europea de Madrid, the master's in Commercial Management at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and the master's in Commercial Management and Digital Marketing at the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija.

Business schools offer many programmes designed for people already working in sales. Royal Decree 822/2021 created the Máster de Formación Permanente, a university continuing-education qualification of 60 to 120 ECTS credits that is not an official degree. EAE Business School in Madrid, for example, runs a Máster en Dirección Comercial y Ventas of 60 ECTS credits, taught part-time in Spanish on Fridays and Saturdays over 12 months. Graduates receive the school's own master's and a Máster de Formación Permanente from the Universidad Internacional de la Empresa (UNIE). The programme covers market research and sales forecasting, omnichannel and e-commerce strategies, and leadership, negotiation and management control for sales directors.

Vocational training

Vocational training (FP) offers the Técnico Superior en Gestión de Ventas y Espacios Comerciales, a 2,000-hour higher-level qualification. According to the ministry's TodoFP portal, it leads to jobs such as sales manager, sales representative, commercial agent or sales team coordinator.

Where to study commercial management in Spain

Our directory lists 25 schools for this subject. Madrid has the most, followed by Barcelona. Examples include universities such as the Universidad Camilo José Cela, the Universidad Europea de Madrid, the Universidad CEU San Pablo, the Universidad Alfonso X El Sabio, the Universidad Europea Miguel de Cervantes in Valladolid and the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU; business schools such as IE Business School, ESADE, EAE Business School, ESDEN, ESEM, EUDE, IMF Business School and CESTE in Zaragoza; and training centres focused on sales, such as Formanet in Badalona and Churruca Formación in San Sebastián.

Admission

Students who finished secondary school outside Spain usually apply for a bachelor's degree through UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses international students' academic records and runs the tests needed to enter a Spanish bachelor's degree, and then apply to each university within its deadlines. Master's programmes require a previous degree; business school programmes may also ask for work experience. EAE, for instance, asks for a university degree, preferably in economics, business or marketing, and at least two years of work experience.

Recognition and careers

Commercial management is not a regulated profession in Spain. A foreign degree can receive a declaración de equivalencia, which certifies its academic level (bachelor's or master's), and students who continue studying in Spain can ask for convalidación of subjects. EAE lists career paths such as sales director, direct marketing manager, key account manager, sales manager and trade marketing manager.

Frequently asked questions

Is commercial management the same as marketing?

They overlap. Marketing focuses on the market, the product and the brand; commercial management focuses on selling, sales teams and customers. In Spain many degrees combine the two, such as Marketing y Dirección Comercial.

Can I study commercial management while working?

Yes. Many business school master's programmes are part-time, for example EAE's weekend programme in Madrid.

Is a business school master's in sales an official degree?

Usually not. Official master's degrees are listed in RUCT; business school programmes are often the school's own qualification or a Máster de Formación Permanente.
