Statistics Studies in Spain

Statistics is the science of collecting, analysing and interpreting data to support decisions. Statisticians design surveys and experiments, build probability and statistical models and use computational tools to turn data into useful information for companies, public bodies and research. In Spain it is taught as a dedicated four-year bachelor's degree at a group of public universities, often with a strong data-science component, and as a specialisation in many official master's degrees.

How Statistics degrees are organised

A Spanish bachelor's degree (grado) in Statistics has 240 ECTS credits over four years. At the Universidad de Salamanca, whose new curriculum (Plan 2026) starts in 2026-27, these are divided into basic training (60 ECTS), compulsory subjects (108 ECTS), electives (66 ECTS) and a final project (6 ECTS). The programme aims to train students to apply statistical methods and models in the sciences, social sciences, health, industry, administration and consultancy, integrating mathematics and computing. Salamanca also offers a double degree in Statistics and Computer Engineering.

Related degrees take a more business or data-science angle. The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid teaches a bachelor's degree in Data Analytics for Business (Análisis de Datos para la Empresa) on its Getafe campus: four years, 240 credits, taught bilingually, with subjects such as statistical inference, regression methods, Bayesian modelling and time series.

Admission, language and costs

Students who finished secondary school outside Spain usually apply for an accreditation from UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses international students' records and runs the tests needed to enter a bachelor's degree, and then apply to each university within its own deadlines. The Universidad de Salamanca recommends having taken Applied Mathematics for the Social Sciences or Mathematics II at upper-secondary level. Places are limited: the Universidad de Sevilla offers 30 places and received 55 first-choice applications in 2025-26.

Most degrees are taught in Spanish. Language requirements for graduation vary: the Universidad de Sevilla asks for level B1 in a foreign language, and UC3M asks for B2-level English before students finish. Public universities charge per credit, with prices set by each region; the Universidad de Sevilla charges €12.62 per credit and, from the second year, applies a 99% reduction on the credits passed the previous year.

Seville has the Universidad de Sevilla and the Universidad Pablo de Olavide. Recognition of the qualification

An official Spanish degree is valid throughout the country. Statistician is not among the regulated professions eligible for homologación, according to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, so holders of a foreign Statistics degree can instead request a declaration of equivalence, which is processed only online.

According to the Universidad de Salamanca, Statistics graduates work in health and biomedical research, social and market research, banking, insurance, industry, logistics, public administration and consultancy. In the public sector it names the national statistics institute (INE), the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS), Eurostat and regional and provincial statistics institutes. Teaching is another option; secondary-school teaching requires the official teacher-training master's.
