About Murcia

Murcia is the capital of the Región de Murcia, in south-eastern Spain. With 479,405 inhabitants on 1 January 2025, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE), it is one of the largest municipalities in the country, and the region as a whole had 1,589,138 inhabitants on the same date. The city lies on the Segura river, inland from the Mediterranean coast, and life in the centre revolves around the cathedral, the Glorieta riverside square with the city hall, and the streets of the old town.

For students, Murcia is a regional capital rather than a resort town. It combines a large public university with higher schools of music, drama and design, business and tourism schools, and a Spanish language school. It suits students who want a mid-sized Spanish city with a warm, dry climate and an everyday life that is mostly in Spanish.

Studying in Murcia

Our directory lists 11 active schools in Murcia: nine universities and other higher-education centres, one language school and one primary school. The Universidad de Murcia is the main public university; it offers officially recognised bachelor's degrees (grados), master's degrees and doctoral programmes, and many of its faculties and central services are on the Espinardo campus north of the city. Students with a secondary-school diploma from another country apply through the university's access route for foreign education systems; holders of the European Baccalaureate, for example, first have their access requirements verified by the UNED.

Murcia also has public schools of higher arts education:

  • the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Murcia "Manuel Massotti Littel", for the Título Superior de Música in Composition, Conducting, Performance, Musicology and Music Education
  • the Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático de Murcia (ESAD Murcia), on the Plaza de los Apóstoles, with a degree in Dramatic Art
  • the EDI - Escuela Superior de Diseño de la Región de Murcia, next to the Espinardo campus, with graphic, interior, fashion and product design

According to the conservatory, the Título Superior de Música is equivalent in every respect to a university bachelor's degree and gives access to master's and doctoral studies. Private design schools such as ESI Murcia and Instituto 42 add further options in design.

Business and tourism are well represented in our Murcia listings, with advertising, business administration, public relations, tourism, hotel management, MBA and human resources programmes. ENAE Business School belongs to the Fundación Universidad Empresa de la Región de Murcia (FUERM) and is affiliated to the Universidad de Murcia and the Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena. The Open Faculty, with experience going back to 1965 according to the school, teaches official bachelor's degrees in Tourism and in International Relations. Most programmes in the city are taught in Spanish, so check the language of instruction before you apply.

Learning Spanish in Murcia

Murcia is a good base for learning Spanish in an environment where few people speak English day to day. The Instituto Hispánico de Murcia is a private school that runs Spanish courses in the city, and the university's language service (Servicio de Idiomas) offers Spanish courses for foreigners alongside its other language courses.

Cost of living for students

Murcia is generally less expensive than Madrid, Barcelona or the big coastal cities, but we did not find an official source with current figures for rents, so check prices with your school before you arrive. Housing is usually the largest cost. The Universidad de Murcia lists several housing options on its student pages:

  • a housing exchange (bolsa de alojamiento)
  • a programme in which university students live with older people
  • the Colegio Mayor Azarbe
  • private university residences
  • a youth residence of the regional government

Ask the city's bus and tram operators about student or youth passes, because fares and discounts change from year to year.

Getting around and daily life

The historic centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. City buses (TMP Murcia) and the tram connect the centre with the outlying districts and the university: the EDI design school gives tram Line 1 (stop Biblioteca) and TMP bus line 39 (stop Biológicas) as the public transport links to the Espinardo campus.

Región de Murcia International Airport (RMU) is south of the city; according to Aena, an Interbus line runs directly from the airport to the San Andrés bus station in Murcia. By rail, Renfe runs AVE, Avlo and long-distance trains from Madrid Puerta de Atocha - Almudena Grandes to Murcia, with the first departure from Madrid at 06:15.

Murcia has one of the warmest and driest climates in Spain. At the AEMET Murcia station (normals for 1984-2010), the average temperature is 10.6 °C in January and 27.2 °C in July, when average daily highs reach 34.0 °C. Annual rainfall averages only 297 mm, and the station records an average of 2,967 hours of sunshine a year. Summers are very hot, so look for housing with air conditioning for a summer course.
