Leadership and Human Resource Management

Leadership and human resource management concentrates on the organizational and human facets of the workplace. As well as human resources and organizational behaviour courses, students select from other courses offered via the Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business, including organizational failure, change and transformation and fundamentals of leadership. At SLU a major in leadership and human resource management will take 18 required credit hours. Students must take: MGT 3100: Organization Behaviour, MGT 3300: Management of Human Resources Concentration and MGT 4101: Fundamentals of Leadership. Students will then select two major elective courses from a set list as well as one breadth elective course from a different list. Human Resources Management Studies in Spain

Human resources management (HRM) deals with how organisations recruit, train, pay, evaluate and look after their people, within the framework of employment law. In Spain the field has a distinctive structure: the main bachelor's degree combines HR with labour relations and employment law, and it is followed by a wide range of official university master's degrees and business-school programmes in HR, talent and people management.

How the studies are organised

Bachelor's degree. The usual official degree is the Grado en Relaciones Laborales y Recursos Humanos (labour relations and human resources). Like most Spanish bachelor's degrees it has 240 ECTS credits over four years. At the Universidad de Sevilla, the degree prepares students for advice on employment matters and for the profession of graduado social, a Spanish legal-labour adviser, and covers areas from employment law, social security and HR management to conflict mediation, collective bargaining and occupational risk prevention. Sevilla also requires a B1 level in a foreign language before the degree certificate is issued.

Master's degrees. Official university master's degrees in Spain have 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits. The Register of Universities, Centres and Degrees (RUCT) lists many master's degrees in HR management, under names such as Dirección de Recursos Humanos or Dirección de Recursos Humanos y del Talento. Business schools add their own master's programmes; some are official degrees and others are the school's own qualification (título propio), so it pays to check. ESIC, for example, offers a 60-ECTS HR master's that is an official degree in Madrid and Valencia and a 60-ECTS programme that is ESIC University's own qualification in Seville and Granada.

Admission and language

Students who completed secondary school abroad usually apply to a bachelor's degree through UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses international students' records and runs the tests needed for admission, and then apply to each university within its deadlines. Demand can be high: in 2025-26 the Universidad de Sevilla offered 225 places and received 194 first-choice applications and 1,315 in total.

For a master's degree, applicants apply directly to the university with a bachelor's degree. Each programme sets its own profile: the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid gives priority to psychology graduates and graduates of related social sciences. Most programmes are taught in Spanish, but there are exceptions: the official master's in Human Resources Management at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid is taught in English, with 60 ECTS and 40 places, and offers a double-degree option with a semester in Paris or Limerick.

Where to study HR in Spain

Public universities with the bachelor's degree in labour relations and HR include the Universidad de Sevilla, the Universidad de Murcia, the Universidad de Salamanca, the Universidad de Cádiz and the Universidad Miguel Hernández in Elche. Official master's degrees in HR management are offered, among others, by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Universidad de Cádiz and the Universidad Camilo José Cela. For distance learning, the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and IMF teach online; IMF's HR master's lasts one year and has 60 ECTS.

Costs

Public universities charge regulated fees per credit. At the Universidad de Sevilla the bachelor's degree costs €12.62 per credit, with a 99% discount on credits passed the year before. The Universidad Autónoma de Madrid gives an approximate first-year price of €4,087 for its HR master's, or €7,601 for non-EU students who are not residents. Private universities and business schools set their own prices.

Recognition and careers

Official bachelor's and master's degrees can be checked in the RUCT. Holders of a foreign degree can ask the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities for a declaration of equivalence, which certifies the academic level (bachelor's or master's); homologation is only needed for regulated professions. Graduates work in HR departments, consultancy, employment services and public administration, occupational risk prevention and social-labour auditing, or as graduados sociales: the profession's General Council groups 43 provincial associations with 17,000 members.
