Colorado School of Mines

Colorado School of Mines (Mines) is a public university of engineering and applied science in Golden, Colorado. It opened in 1873, became a territorial institution in 1874 and has been a state institution since Colorado became a state in 1876. Its mission focuses on understanding the Earth, harnessing energy and sustaining the environment, and current priority areas include energy, critical minerals, quantum science, AI and space.

Mines offers bachelor's degrees and minors across STEM disciplines, master's degrees with thesis and non-thesis options, PhD programmes and professional education. Undergraduate majors include, for example:

• Mining, petroleum, geological and geophysical engineering
• Chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical and environmental engineering
• Metallurgical and materials engineering and ceramic engineering
• Computer science, applied mathematics and statistics
• Quantum systems engineering and engineering physics

Teaching is hands-on, with laboratory work, field sessions (from field mapping in national parks to training in an underground mine) and a year-long capstone design project with external clients. The university states that more than 1,250 organisations recruit its students each year. Campus life includes over 200 student organisations and 18 NCAA Division II varsity teams, and an International Student and Scholar Services office supports international students.
