The University of Tennessee is a US public university, established in 1794. It educates almost 28,000 students from all 50 states and more than 100 different countries. The Tennessee Intensive English Program, TIEP is aimed at non-native speakers, who wish to continue their studies in the USA. The program is held in Martin, a small, beautiful and quiet city, where students can concentrate on their academic goals.

The Tennessee Intensive English Program, or TIEP, is situated in the quiet, peaceful city of Martin, Tennessee on the beautiful, award-winning campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin. This helpful program offers English courses for speakers of other languages, prepares students to enter the University, and conducts special contract programs for students and their families.

The primary purpose of the Tennessee Intensive English Program is to prepare international students with the language skills and cultural adjustment needed to succeed in both undergraduate and graduate programs at the university level. In addition, the program seeks to assist individuals with improvement of their English for business or personal needs.

The main curriculum of the TIEP has six levels of study, each lasting 8 weeks in duration, and there are six sessions offered per year. Participants are required to take a placement exam at the beginning of the term and will be placed in an appropriate level during orientation.

In general, the TIEP students are in class 23 hours per week, with classes running throughout the day between 8 am and 4 pm. Late or mid-term entry is possible, but the staff recommends that students start at the beginning of an 8 week term. All of the TIEP teachers have advanced degrees in relevant disciplines and keep current in the field. Most have lived and/or worked overseas and deeply understand cultural adjustment.

In addition to offering courses designed to improve students’ English speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar, the TIEP offers periodic preparation courses each year for tests such as the TOEFL and GMAT. These courses are intended for advanced students who are applying to graduate school. Important to note is that no TOEFL score is required for admission into the Tennessee Intensive English Program, and upon successful completion of Level 6, students may enter undergraduate courses at the University of Tennessee at Martin with no TOEFL requirement.

The dynamic center in which the Tennessee Intensive English Program is conducted is equipped with computer labs to enhance English language through technology. In addition, students are regularly given the opportunity to engage with American and other international students in class and on campus through conversation partners and joint events, and a variety of International Programs on campus host a number of interesting events throughout the year.

The Tennessee Intensive English Program is part of the university’s Office of International Programs and International Admissions. The primary mission of this office is to expand the service capability of the university to international students, adding cultural diversity to their university, enriching their surrounding community, and promoting international education and global understanding.
