According to Professor Diane Watt, Head of the School of English and Languages, to benefit fully from an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program at the University of Surrey, all students will need a good standard of English language. To ensure this happens, her department offers year- round English language preparation courses and summer English language preparation courses (pre-sessional) for students who do not have the level of English required to join a degree program directly, or for students who meet their degree program requirements but wish to improve their English and study skills before the start of the program.
The English language courses at the School of English and Languages are taught by highly experienced, professional tutors who combine state-of-the-art teaching methods with up-to-date insights from linguistic research. The classes give students the opportunity to increase their confidence by improving their English skills and interacting with fellow classmates. This will maximize their chances of academic and professional success and help them make the most of their time at the University of Surrey.
In addition to group English language courses the School of English and Languages offers private English tuition—courses which can be tailored to suit the individual needs of students. For students studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Surrey, the School of English and Languages also offers a free English Language Support Program (ELSP) to assist those students with their English during their time at the university.
Finally, the School of English and Languages is a British Council accredited test center for the internationally recognized IELTS examination and offers a number of test dates as well as IELTS preparation courses.
