Study in Guernsey, The United Kingdom

Study in Guernsey, The United Kingdom

Among the islands located in the English Channel lies the British-protected yet independent state of Guernsey. This set of forgotten emerald gems is a little-known haven amidst the bustle and noise of most European countries. With only two major cities spread over a handful of tiny islands, it is one of the most unique cultural and educational experiences in all of Europe.

Guernsey adopted the educational programs used in the United Kingdom, as a result, it holds some junior colleges for students between the ages of 14 and 19. This is a primary way to pursue studies beyond secondary school, which students can choose to leave as early as age 14. Unfortunately, Guernsey has no universities. Students located on Guernsey must travel into the United Kingdom territories to find university studies. This also means that international students in Guernsey – though possible – are a relatively rare occurrence.

There are several islands that compose Guernsey, the largest of which include Guernsey Island, Alderney and Sark. Students have the opportunity to visit all of these islands, which represent the closest connection Britain has to its medieval roots. When it comes to activities and dining, students can expect art workshops for all ages, beautiful coastlines for strolling and a delicious variety of seafood. The Ellingham Cottages, famed on Guernsey, are also excellent for a weekend getaway from studies.

Students should carefully consider the following aspects of Guernsey living before attending school on the islands:
  • Majority of courses taught in English, some in French.
  • Islands only accessible by plane or boat.

Major Fields of Study in Guernsey

Guernsey, being a unique self-governing dependency, also has a unique educational system. Though the lower levels of education (primary to secondary) are more or less identical to United Kingdom schools, higher education opportunities do not find themselves on equal footing.

However, this has not stopped Guernsey from fully developing every higher education facility it can. This dedication to educational development extends into its coursework as well. On such a small set of islands, it is surprising to find that Guernsey’s college-level programs are so diverse and multi-disciplinary. Unlike larger international cities like Dubai or London, no one branch of learning stands out as Guernsey’s preferred study choice.

The only main consideration for students attending Guernsey schools is the dependency’s economy. With much of its economic success resting on financial services (banking, etc.); such studies may receive more attention than others. Tourism, another major industry in Guernsey, might also be preferred. These two subjects, however, can only be recommended as major studies on Guernsey due to their relevancy to the economy, and not as a result of offered course listings.

Schools of Guernsey

There are only a few higher education and further education schools on Guernsey, which makes studies on the islands more limited than in larger cities and states. However, the education currently in place has a glowing reputation even among higher-rated United Kingdom institutions.

  1. The College of Further Education in Guernsey is one of the only ways to pursue post-secondary education in Guernsey. Submitting to constant upgrades and renovations, the school has four campuses and offers hundreds of educational options, either as degrees or individual classes.
  2. The GTA University Centre is another popular way to earn a higher education in Guernsey. Located in St. Peter Port, it offers hundreds of relevant courses from a range of UK institutions. A unique education experience, they receive funding and support from many private businesses and government institutions.
