Study in Providence, The United States

Study in Providence, The United States

Providence was one of the first cities established by the United States, and has done nothing but flourish since it’s founding. The Rhode Island-based metropolis is the gleaming center point of this tiny U.S. state, filled with urban growth, a culturally rich nightlife and a longstanding history of dedication to higher education. Students can travel here to join the thousands before them on College Hill, Providence’s 18th-century testimony to ongoing educational excellence.

Providence has an immovable reputation as one of the United State’s most impressive college towns. The reputation and respect for this university-rich city run so deep that several of Providence’s universities are considered as flagship campuses for the entire state. These institutions are mostly private, with some dating as far back to the North American colonization. Aside from larger universities, the city also offers an impressive number of community colleges, and specialty colleges and schools. Other Rhode Island universities – based elsewhere in the state – are so desperate to become part of the city’s reputation, they even place satellite campuses in Providence.

Rhode Island is a tapestry of art, culture and history. Whether it’s the colonial houses still standing on College Hill, or the unique experience at the Culinary Archives and Museum. After taking a skating lesson by riding their bicycle into town, students can attend summer carnivals, experience colonial era living or listen to local music bands play at nightclubs. Don’t forget to stop by a little Rhode Island café – they’re famous for their handmade sandwiches.

Some other considerations for students hoping to study at Providence include:
  • Majority of courses taught in English.
  • Some institutions are religiously affiliated.

Major Fields of Study in Providence

It is mostly due to the Ivy League school of Brown University that Providence’s study fields remain relatively diverse. The other four ‘flagship schools’ of Rhode Island specialize in certain academic areas as opposed to offering a generally broad range of studies that Brown University does. As a result of these specialty institutions, some academic areas are more highly sought in Providence.

The culinary arts deserve special mention amongst Providence’s studies, not only because an entire school exists to train future students in this study, but also because the city holds a museum dedicated to its history. Various art studies also receive attention due to city’s atmosphere and the acclaimed Rhode Island School of Design. As a result, these studies are notably popular in Providence:
  • Culinary arts
  • Art and design
  • Business

Education and teacher training is also offered by a number of Providence’s institutions, demonstrating the city’s increased efforts at all levels towards academic excellence.
