Those interested in the environment and the complex inner workings of natural systems are ripe for nature science studies. Nature science, or natural science, is the overarching term used to describe scientific studies of the natural world. It focuses mainly on environmental science, biology, and the properties governing natural phenomena.

Nature and natural science is often studied in colleges and universities. Some technical institutions or science academies will also offer courses in this field. Usually, natural science will be pursued as a major, and students will minor is a more specific science area. These courses will require fieldwork, internships, labs, or other types of hands-on experience along with educational classes. Degrees under the title of ‘nature science’ are often only earned at a bachelor level, with more specific natural science areas being earned at a master’s or higher.

Environmental societies exist which will hold classes or workshops, educating participants on natural science topics. Museums, nature centers, private educational workshops, government initiatives and some university programs will offer courses in certain natural science subjects for the public.

Skills, Qualifications, and Prerequisites for Studies in Nature Sciences

To enter a nature science program in a higher education institution, candidates will have to qualify under the college, university, or technical institution’s admission requirements. This usually means having already obtained some form of a secondary school completion certificate,

Any classes not offered by a higher education institution are unlikely to have very many admission requirements. In fact most workshops will be available to the general public. However, these courses typically cover the most basic learning on this subject, and will not provide any degrees or certifications.

The top candidates for this field of study will already have a high aptitude towards science and some mathematics. They must enjoy the outdoors and love exploring natural and biological processes. This is a hands-on science with a need for critical thinking skills, analytical thought processes and effective problem-solving skills. Graduates from these studies often work closely with a research team, so the best candidates will be hard-working individuals able to compromise, share and otherwise function effectively on a work team.

Other helpful qualities for this field of study include:
  • Communication and presentation skills.
  • Organization skills.
Skills and Qualifications Acquired from Studies in Nature Sciences

While candidates may choose to focus their attention in specific areas of natural science, a generic course of study will cover at least some of the following areas:
  • Astronomy.
  • Chemistry.
  • Biology.
  • Physical sciences.
  • Ecology of various geological formations.
  • Geological and geographical studies.
  • Conservation,
  • Evoluti on and history of the earth.
  • Types of ecosystems and their properties.
  • Relations and affects of humans on nature.
Careers for Studies in Nature Sciences

Many graduates from nature science study programs pursue teaching at primary, secondary and post-secondary educational levels. They often work for educational institutions, research labs, non-profit organizations, environmental protection and conservation agencies, and industrial corporations. They can be geologists, astronomers, supervisors, geneticists, ecologists, surveyors, analysts, environmental protection specialists or consultants.
