Study Computer languages

Computer languages are instructions according to which computers function. It is the duty of the computer programmers to develop these languages and instructions. Computer programmers are those who have studied Computer languages and are efficient not only in handling these languages but also resolving related problems and logical tests within the computer system. They take the necessary designs developed by the software engineers and convert them into functional instructions for the computer which ultimately takes the shape of a program. Study of Computer languages helps not only those who want to pursue a career in this subject but those who are students of other disciplines also.

Types of Computer languages

Broadly, there are two types of Computer languages. Low level languages include machine language or binary code and assembly or symbolic programming language. The second type i.e. high level languages are more user friendly and can be further divided into the following types:
  • Algebraic Formula-Type Processing languages are for solving mathematical and statistical problems. These are such as BASIC, FORTRAN, APL, ALGOL, etc.
  • Business Data Processing languages like COBOL and RPG.
  • String and List Processing
  • Object Oriented Programming languages such as C, C++ and Java
  • Visual Programming languages for developing Windows based applications. These are such as Visual Basic, Visual C, Visual Java.
Learning Computer languages

Apart from full time computer programming degree courses, one may also study Computer languages from different institutes and computer schools. Online courses on Computer languages are also available. A degree course requires minimum of two years study. Higher degrees are offered by most of the general and technical universities. All you have to do for joining a computer language course (other than the degree courses) is to gain a fair knowledge of which programming languages are needed for what purpose and what you exactly want to learn.

Studying Computer languages can be frustrating at times because of the repetitive usage of codes and common mistakes that happen. But successful completion of writing a program gives immense satisfaction. Knowing one or two Computer languages is good, but for being a good programmer and for better opportunities knowing five or six languages help. That way you get to know about common construct among them and the problem solving method in abstract.

Career in Computer Programming

Trained computer programmers have a various options. With the rising trend of computerization of every field and sector, computer programmers are usually in a high demand. The IT sector boom bears a testimony to that. Employers look for people with vocational training in computer programming, preferably a computer programming degree. But those with knowledge and great programming skills can also work as independent consultants. A computer programmer has demand in practically all sectors of the economy today. Specializations in certain types of programming languages are also appreciated by industries. Pay packages offered are more or less impressive and this gets only better with experience in the industry. However, with the change in technology, programmers need to adapt themselves with these advancements for having a better career path in front of them.
