Logistics Management, also known as supply chain management, involves the planning, implementing and controlling the proper flow and storage of goods, services as well as information- from where these originate to where they meet the customer according to requirements. Therefore, to put it very simply, Logistics Management involves the governance of the whole supply chain. The activities may range from managing transportation, controlling warehousing, handling materials, fulfilling orders, planning demand and supply, designing logistics network, so on and so forth. In certain cases logistics managers also have to serve the customers directly, plan production and supervise assembly and packaging activities.

Study of Logistics Management, therefore, focuses on all strata of planning as well as execution, starting from strategic and ending at tactical. Students are taught how to integrate and coordinate activities of marketing, finance, managing information, as well as (to some extent) manufacturing into an effective and efficient whole.

Logistics Management Courses

While a Masters Degree in Logistics management is offered by many universities and B-schools around the world, post graduate diploma courses are also quite popular. The diploma courses are generally short term and provide students with a fair (if not in-depth) knowledge of the subject. Masters degree courses in logistics management generally span two years, and a thesis paper needs to be submitted at the end of the final term.

The compulsory modules during the course in most of the universities usually include the following topics:
  • Theoretical and applied business skill
  • Strategic management
  • Logistics strategy and operations
  • Marketing behavior, channels and strategy, etc.
The final years involve specialized study in managerial cost accounting, retail management, international marketing, financial management, etc. Internships and hands-on training form an integral part of the courses on Logistics Management.
Certain online courses are also available which award diplomas. While some are genuinely well structured and carry weight in the job market, others are seldom authentic and are hardly recognized by employers. Gather proper information about the course, its importance and structure before enrolling into one.
