Institutional relations involve the creation, development and execution of the strategies for organizational growth and expansion. It is usually the responsibility of the institutional relations division of a company, organization, or agency to establish and maintain a strong and enduring relationship with different organizations from different fields of industry and government which are relevant to the pursuit of success of their mother organization. Furthermore, it seeks to build significant partnerships with other organizations that are designed to generate and apply particular programs that are able to respond to the goals and objectives of the company.

A degree in institutional relations can be pursued in different universities and colleges. These degree programs typically teach students to become very accustomed to the intricacies of this profession, develop and build contacts, and gain practical experience that is very valuable in this field.

The introductory course in institutional relations prepares the students to become familiar with each of the basic concepts of this field and how to apply them in the most common situations that they are likely to encounter. It also teaches students about the specific role that institutional relations plays in the modern setting. Case studies and highly involved projects are used to help students analyze actual real world challenges and solutions. This also helps students acquire the skills that they need to be able to handle their future responsibilities such as: improving the image of the organization, releasing formal and official statements, and granting interviews.

Topics in this area include emerging technologies, organizational relations, types and characteristics of media, and communication techniques. In the advanced courses, institutional relations students are taught about planning and implementing a comprehensive campaign to be used in achieving the institutional relations objectives of a particular company or agency. The students are expected to design plans which outline ways to contact different media outlets such as newspapers and the internet and use them to foster new affiliations with target institutions.

Institutional relations professionals usually land employment in companies that need to improve their image and their network of partners. Careers in management are not uncommon. Institutional relations managers are given the responsibility to promote and facilitate the communications activities of the company, they are also charged with disseminating the recommendations and research results that are generated by the company. Institutional relations managers are also in charge of developing policies and strategies that have the objective of mobilizing financial supplies and resources for the organization.
