Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Biochemistry
The Bachelor of Science Degree program in Medical Biochemistry is a four year undergraduate course of study open to all students who possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. However, because the program requires students to have a strong background in mathematics and science, many colleges and universities will have students take and pass an entrance examination prior to being admitted to the program.
In the initial year of the program, students are offered courses that are drawn from both the medical and biological sciences, as well as general education classes in subjects such as mathematics, composition, speech and technology. The primary goal of the first year is to have students develop and master their communication and data handling skills, both of which will help prepare them for the rest of their studies in the three years to follow. Many institutions will even give students the opportunity to prepare and deliver a video-taped presentation, allowing the instructor and classmates to offer helpful feedback.
The second and third years of the Bachelor of Science Degree program in Medical Biochemistry consist primarily of coursework directly related to the discipline. During this period, students will be given the opportunity to select a particular emphasis in the field, a track that could include Genetics, Microbiology and Physiology, among others subjects. The courses in the second and third year will deal with a number of topics, including:
- Gene expression
- Molecular cell biology
- Molecular machines
- Molecular medicine
- Biomedical ethics (with an emphasis on Medical Biochemists)

In the fourth and final year of the program, much of the coursework revolves around a module called Biomedical Mechanisms of Human Disease, where students learn the causes and treatment of certain biomedical illnesses, along with the ways in which these diseases can be prevented. In addition to this module, students are permitted to select three units or sections of their choice, with options that may include:
- Cancer Cell and Molecular Biology
- Proteins: Structure, Dynamics and Engineering
- Molecular Biology of Gene Expression

The final year will also include a capstone research project, a project that accounts for a large portion of a student’s grade in the fourth year. Students generally have three options with regard to the type of project they can undertake: a school-based project, library-based project and lab-based project, the latter of which is encouraged by instructors and the department, as this is the type of setting in which most graduates will find work upon graduation.
