Thanatology is the scientific study of death. Bircham University’s Thanatology Death Studies program describes the understanding of death and how it influences individuals. Thanatology does not incorporate palliative care, the medical treatment for dying individuals or forensic studies. It concentrates on grief and bereavement issues, counselling and the religious ideas of dying and death from the viewpoint of both the dying and bereaved. Thanatology aims to support and care for those facing or coping with death or dealing with the terminally ill.
