Physiotherapy Schools and Programs in Spain

Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy

UIC Barcelona’s Degree Programme in Physiotherapy prepares students to enter the workforce by tutoring them the analytical and reflective skills necessary in order to work with patients to find the best solutions. Physiotherapists have the chance to improve their patient’s overall quality of life and are thus responsible for keeping regular contact with patients and other health professionals. Because of this, it is imperative that students develop a sense of commitment and responsibility, whilst at the same time nurturing the self-critical skills that enriches their learning. The university places a firm emphasis on teamwork in order to guarantee successful interdisciplinary co-operation throughout students’ professional careers. In order to achieve these impressive goals, UIC’s programme offers a flexible and modern curriculum with a close link between theoretical content and practical lessons in all areas of knowledge. Students also have the chance to carry out professional, clinical practice in physiotherapy centres and rehabilitation facilities.

University Master's Degree in Paediatric Physiotherapy – Official

UIC’s Master's Degree in Paediatric Physiotherapy has two fields of specialisation in which students will be split based on their access route: one concentrated on professional practice and another on research. Within the concentration focused on professional practice, UIC has developed two academic programmes designed at gearing the program to your background in research methodology. The programme you select will depend on your prior knowledge and whether you are interested in pursuing doctoral studies after this course. If you have no prior understanding of research methodology, you will take the programme directed at professional practice. As an elective subject you will be required to take the 6-credit Research Methodology class, which will be helpful in completing your Final Master's Degree Project. If you can establish prior understanding of research methodology, you will take the programme directed on professional practice and the optional subjects on paediatrics.

Postgraduate Degree in Pain and Myofascial Dysfunction

Become accustomed to and build on the theoretical and practical foundations of dry needling, the chief tool in an uncompromising approach to treating myofascial trigger points. Generally, muscles and in particular, myofascial trigger points, are the main cause of pain in people. According to doctors Travell and Simons, myofascial pain syndrome means the sensory, motor and autonomic signs and symptoms produced by myofascial trigger points. Physiotherapists must be familiar with this syndrome and know how to successfully diagnose and treat it, with the aim to stopping the symptoms becoming chronic. In an international approach, the shoulder and myofascial trigger points should not be contemplated in isolation, but rather in connection with other structures such as joints, nerves, etc.

Course on Diacutaneous Fibrolysis: Kurt-Ekman Method

Diacutaneous Fibrolysis is a method of treating pain in the musculoskeletal system that brings excellent results, particularly in soft tissue. Its system of action consists of destroying adhesions and irritative corpuscles that develop between the different sliding surfaces of the soft tissues, by means of hooks applied to the skin. This method was created by the Swedish physiotherapist Kurt Ekman in the 1950s and since that time it has evolved substantially. These changes have been possible thanks to research and knowledge resulting from research, chiefly in the area of mechano-transduction. Today, the therapy is based on a centripetal approach, initially treating areas distal to the injury that are anatomically and biomechanically related to the disfunction. This method enables physiotherapists to treat the cause of the disfunction and stop the potential adverse effects of directly treating the painful area.

Mézières. Module 2: TNME of the upper limb and hand. Pelvis, posture and lower limb motor dysfunction

The Mézières Method, an inventor in global physiotherapy and muscle chains, has, in recent years, undergone considerable improvement and combined new scientific advancements while retaining its core and originality. The 4th seminar covers: review of theoretical-practical concepts (shoulder girdle and upper limbs); upper limb; shoulder, elbow and hand; posture (Brachii muscles); subsequent revision and global treatment of upper and lower limbs. The 5th seminar covers: biomechanics of pelvis and sacroiliac joint; evaluation of pelvis and lower limbs; postural treatment for lower limb asymmetry and postural treatment for shoulder girdle and upper limb asymmetry. The 6th seminar covers: evaluation of pelvic posture; upper-limb myofascial chains; foot-knee-hip (articular chain); posture and gait re-education and postures under stress and postural control.

Mézières. Module 1: Spinal column: Lumbar and cervical pathology. Breathing, abdominals and postural control

The Mézières Method uses worldwide active stretching and manual, myofascial and joint mobilisation methods, establishing a precise plan based on breathing dynamics. By releasing myofascial tension, readjusting the joints and training the postural proprioceptive system, UIC are able to re-synchronize posture and movement and give pain relief. The 1st seminar covers: introduction to postural re-education; global posture and extensibility evaluation; ADiBAS (3D clinical measurement protocol); compensation and analgesic reflex and global re-education: pelvis, spinal column and breathing. The 2nd seminar covers: review of basic posture; breathing and the cervical spine; cervix types and pathology; shoulder girdle: posture and movement and cervical muscle chains and shoulder girdle. The 3rd seminar covers: introduction to postural control of abdominal/lumbar motor tasks; lumbar pathology; global symmetrical postures; sitting and standing postures and case analysis and treatment.

Mézières. Module 3: Scoliosis, mandibular dysfunction, types of breathing, group application

The Mézières Method is a worldwide, progressive and active physiotherapy technique that is suitable for patients of all ages, taking into account the possibilities of each person. It is founded on the careful analysis, study and observation of human physiology, anatomy and biomechanics. Each patient is given a personalised treatment based on their symptoms to identify and address the underlying causes. The 7th seminar covers: flat back; dorsolumbar pathology; pathomechanics of scoliosis; asymmetrical postures (Scoliosis); Mézières exercises (Scoliosis). The 8th seminar covers: types of breathing; mandibular dysfunction and posture; clinical reasoning (Practical evaluation/manual therapy workshops in global physiotherapy) and group application (Global gym).

Course on Clinical Neurodynamics

Neural mobilisation is a non-invasive method that physiotherapists have used for years. Publications on neural disorders can often be complex, something which makes it hard to apply neurodynamic methods safely and effectively and has led to a gap in many practitioners’ clinical experience. Due to the lack of professionals with highly developed knowledge of neurodynamics, the novelty of these methods and the increasing demand for instruction among physiotherapists, the need for teaching in the area has become apparent. Due to this, Michael Shacklock has developed an applied and systematic technique for the clinical application of neurodynamics, which, thanks to new ideas such as structural differentiation or neurodynamic sequencing, helps physiotherapists deal with musculoskeletal problems with a neural component.
