Illinois State University is a public university in Normal, Illinois, in the United States. Established in 1857, it describes itself as the oldest public university in Illinois. It was originally called Illinois State Normal University, "normal" being a term for a teacher-training school, and the town of Normal, formerly North Bloomington, took its name from the university in 1865. Today the university reports about 22,000 students and a student-to-faculty ratio of 19:1.
