About Cordoba

Puente Romano en CórdobaPuente Romano en Córdoba

Córdoba is a provincial capital in Andalusia, in southern Spain, on the banks of the Guadalquivir river. The municipality had 324,159 inhabitants in 2025, according to the Andalusian Institute of Statistics and Cartography (IECA). Córdoba was the capital of al-Andalus, and its historic centre, including the Mosque-Cathedral, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as is the nearby caliphal city of Medina Azahara.

For students, Córdoba offers the services of a mid-sized city at a calmer pace than Seville or Madrid. The historic centre is compact, many daily errands can be done on foot, and Spanish is the language of daily life, which makes the city a practical choice for language learners.

Studying in Córdoba

Our directory lists 11 active schools in Córdoba: three higher-education centres, three language schools and five primary and secondary schools. The higher-education centres are public schools of the arts. The Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño Mateo Inurria traces its roots to 1866, when the Escuela Provincial de Bellas Artes was created, and is housed in the historic Palacio del Duque de Hornachuelos; it teaches the Bachillerato in Arts, advanced vocational cycles in art and design, and higher design studies. The Escuela Superior de Arte Dramático (ESAD Córdoba), based in the Teatro Duque de Rivas, offers an official qualification equivalent to a university bachelor's degree in three specialities: text-based acting, musical theatre acting and stage design. Music students can apply to the Conservatorio Superior de Música "Rafael Orozco".

Families moving with children will find both public and international options, such as The British School of Córdoba, which teaches pupils up to the age of 18 and includes Bachillerato.

Learning Spanish in Córdoba

UCOidiomas, the official language centre of the Universidad de Córdoba, is accredited by the Instituto Cervantes and runs Spanish programmes for foreign students, including:

  • an annual Spanish course
  • term courses in Spanish language
  • a summer language and culture programme (Explorar Andalucía)
  • Spanish language and culture programmes for adults
  • DELE C2 preparation and personalised language coaching

The centre is also an examination centre for the DELE, SIELE and CCSE (the Spanish nationality test). Its 45-hour term course at levels B1, B2 and C1 costs €448.38, accommodation not included. Among private schools, Academia Hispánica was the first school of the International House network and is accredited by the Instituto Cervantes.

Cost of living for students

Public transport is inexpensive. In 2026 the AUCORSA city bus company charges €1.30 for a single ticket, and with the current subsidies a trip with the student bus card (Bono-Bus Estudiante) costs €0.35 and the monthly Tarjeta Joven costs €14, according to AUCORSA's 2026 fare table. These prices are guaranteed for the whole of 2026 under the national transport aid extended by Royal Decree 17/2025.

Rent is the main expense. We did not find an official source with current room prices; the Universidad de Córdoba's accommodation service manages university residence halls, including the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción residence, and language schools usually help with homestays or shared flats.

Getting around and daily life

Most of the historic centre is walkable, and AUCORSA buses connect it with the residential districts and the university campuses. Renfe AVE, Avlo and long-distance trains link Córdoba with Madrid Puerta de Atocha - Almudena Grandes, and both stations are in the city centre. Córdoba has a small airport operated by Aena, but most international students arrive through the larger airports of Madrid, Seville or Málaga and continue by train.

Córdoba is known for very hot summers. At the AEMET Córdoba Airport station (normals for 1981-2010), the average temperature is 9.3 °C in January and 28.0 °C in July, when average daily highs reach 36.9 °C. Annual rainfall averages 605 mm, falling mostly between autumn and spring. If you plan a summer course, expect intense heat in July and August.
