About universities in Honduras

It wasn’t until the late 1950s when Honduras got its own National Education System. The reforms brought about in 1957 no longer treated education as a privilege of the rich. These reforms were brought about by Ramón Villeda Morales’s government (1957-63), which also set up a school construction plan.

Today, Honduras’ higher education system comprises public and private colleges, universities and learning centers. It is directly managed and supervised by the Ministry of Education and channeled through The Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras (UNAH), the country’s oldest State University. They follow the British system of education.
Here are some statistics:
  • About 65 per cent of school children don’t have the means to go beyond Grade six.
  • Over 40 per cent of the total population and 80 per cent in villages are illiterate.
  • Only 14 per cent of the total population goes through its entire education.

Students join higher education at age 18. It is offered by the many colleges and universities in Honduras. Many of these institutions are based in the big cities, which leaves out the majority of the population from receiving a good education.

(2) Institutes, which offer concentrations usually in one or more areas and lead to the training of professionals,
