Keyano College is a comprehensive community college in Fort McMurray, in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in northern Alberta, Canada. It opened in 1965 as the Alberta Vocational Centre and took the name Keyano College in 1975. Teaching takes place mainly at two sites in Fort McMurray, the Clearwater Campus and the Suncor Energy Industrial Centre, and leads to certificates, diplomas, trades qualifications and bachelor's degrees.

  • University transfer: first one or two years of a degree in arts and sciences
  • Business and computing, including accounting and business administration
  • Health and social services, including nursing and early childhood education
  • Trades and apprenticeships, such as welding, electrical and power engineering
  • English as a second language (ESL) and bridging courses

Keyano is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) for international students with a study permit. Programmes open to them include nursing and health sciences, early childhood education, computer systems technology and university transfer, and many include co-op or practicum placements. An International Education Office helps with visa requirements and arrival in Canada. Students can live on campus in furnished suites at Clearwater Hall or in townhouses at Penhorwood Place. International applications are submitted through ApplyAlberta.

Certificates, diplomas and four-year degrees in these areas:

  • Academic upgrading (high school equivalency)
  • Arts, sciences and environment, including university transfer

Some courses are offered in HyFlex or online formats.

Admission Requirements

International students apply through ApplyAlberta, ideally at least six months before the programme starts. Documents needed:

  • Transcripts, final examination results and copies of diplomas or degrees
  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • Any further documents the programme requires; an IQAS credential assessment may be requested

Each application costs a non-refundable $107. After accepting an offer, students pay a non-refundable $5,000 deposit within 10 business days and receive a letter of acceptance and a Provincial Attestation Letter to apply for a Canadian study permit. The approved permit must be uploaded by 1 August (fall intake), 1 December (winter) or 1 April (spring/summer).

Financial Aid

Keyano College offers scholarships, bursaries and awards, including free tuition for local graduates. Students can also apply for financial assistance such as the Learner Income Support Program, government student loans and third-party sponsorship. The site does not describe scholarships specifically for international students.

Housing

Keyano College runs its own student housing for full-time students, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis:

  • Clearwater Hall: furnished on-campus suites with six single bedrooms and shared kitchen, living room and bathrooms
  • Penhorwood Place: furnished townhouse units with two to six bedrooms
  • Family housing: unfurnished two- or three-bedroom townhouses at Penhorwood

Water, electricity and internet are included in the rent. Applications are made online with a $50 application fee.
