International applicants are assessed on their secondary qualifications with country- and programme-specific requirements; for example, IGCSE applicants need Ordinary levels plus at least three AS or A level subjects, with an average of C or B depending on the programme. Non-native English speakers must also meet the English requirements. Admitted undergraduates may need a provincial attestation letter (PAL) from New Brunswick for their study permit; from 1 January 2026, master's and PhD students at public institutions are exempt from the PAL.
Minimum scores for direct entry to most undergraduate programmes:
- IELTS Academic 6.5
- TOEFL iBT 85 (before 2026) or 4.5 overall with at least 4.5 in speaking and writing (from January 2026)
- CAEL 60, PTE Academic 59, Duolingo 115
- Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency 176
Nursing and Health Sciences at Saint John require IELTS 7.0 or equivalent. Applicants without a test score can be admitted conditionally and study English full time at Saint John College (EAP programme for IELTS 2.0-5.5, or the one-semester ESL Support Program), starting in September, January or May.
International high school applicants, transfer students and continuing students are eligible for UNB scholarships once accepted; academic achievement is the main criterion. All entrance students submit an entrance scholarship application, and continuing students apply each year. Needs-based financial aid is handled by the financial aid offices in Saint John and Fredericton.
