Study in Niigata, Japan

Study in Niigata, Japan

Niigata may be a capital city, but it sure doesn’t have the same overpowering, industrial atmosphere of some other cities. In fact, this Japanese metropolis turns urban life upside down with some rural delights, including fantastic flora and close, friendly communities. This port town ships surrounds itself with temples and Japanese rice paddies, keeping close too its cultural and economic heritage. Students flock to this island city not just for the excellent education, but also for the individualized cultural experiences.

There are, truly, only a handful of higher education institutions in Niigata. This does not, however, reflect their quality. You may not find Niigata’s schools among the top ranking in Japan, but this is little surprise considering the giant, global cities that like Tokyo and Kyoto, which overtake much of Japan’s student business. Nonetheless, Niigata does not fall short when it comes to higher education. With a number of international and Japanese universities, some of which choose to specialize in specific fields of study, Niigata offers an excellent variety of courses for post-secondary students.

Niigata is a great destination for students who wish to experience Japanese life and culture, but don’t take as well to the crowded, bustling city environment. This harbor city is rich in Japanese sites and sounds, including several historical and cultural museums – and being so close to the sea means an excellent selection of authentic Japanese sushi. Students can take a river cruise to relax after a hard day’s work, or amuse themselves at the indoor sports events, arcades and karaoke bars.

Other considerations for students wishing to study in Niigata include:
  • Majority of courses taught in Japanese or English.
  • Somewhat more rural and remote than other cities.
