The Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh) is a traditional private university based in Valdivia, in southern Chile. It was founded by Supreme Decree No. 3,757 of 7 September 1954 and inaugurated on 12 March 1955. Its origins go back to the Escuela de Artes y Oficios, created by decree on 6 July 1849. The Universidad del Bío-Bío (UBB) is a state-run public university in Chile and, according to its website, the only public university of the Biobío and Ñuble regions. It is accredited by the CNA, Chile's accreditation body. Its origins go back to the Universidad Técnica del Estado (UTE), created on 9 April 1947; the present university was formed in 1988 by the merger of the Universidad de Bío Bío in Concepción and the Instituto Profesional de Chillán. The Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM) is a Chilean university with a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
