Teacher Preparation Schools and Programs in Barcelona, Spain

About Teacher Preparation Schools and Programs in Barcelona, Spain

Teacher preparation (Magisterio in Spain) is the university training for working as a teacher in nursery and primary schools. In Spain, primary school teaching is a regulated profession: to practise it you need the corresponding official bachelor's degree. The programmes combine child development, the teaching of each school subject, inclusive education and long periods of practical training in schools.

How teacher training is organised in Spain

The bachelor's degree (grado) that qualifies graduates to work as primary school teachers has 240 ECTS credits, which equals four years of full-time study. State regulations allow degree plans to include specialisations (menciones) of 30 to 60 credits.

Teaching in secondary schools, the bachillerato or vocational training follows a different route: after a bachelor's degree in the subject you want to teach, you need the official master's degree in teacher training, which has 60 credits.

Where to study teacher preparation in Barcelona

In our directory, teacher preparation in Barcelona is represented by the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), an online university based in the city. Its qualifications in this field are listed in the official register of Spanish universities and degrees (RUCT):

  • Bachelor's degree in Primary Education (Grado en Educación Primaria, 240 ECTS, official)
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Education (official; it does not qualify graduates to work as primary teachers)
  • Master's degree in Teacher Training for Compulsory Secondary Education, Bachillerato, Vocational Training and Language Teaching

According to the UOC, its Primary Education degree is taught fully online without fixed timetables, but its five compulsory work-placement subjects (Prácticum I to V) include hours in a school. The plan offers four specialisations: English Language, Therapeutic Pedagogy, Hearing and Language, and Digital Drive for Educational Transformation.

One key point for international students: the degree is taught entirely in Catalan, and some subjects require a good command of written and spoken Catalan. The university states that the degree costs less than €900 per semester, and its next intake starts on 17 February 2027.

Admission: the PAP and applying from abroad

In Catalonia, entry to bachelor's degrees in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education requires passing the personal aptitude test (prueba de aptitud personal, PAP). It has two exams: one on communication skills and critical reasoning, and one on logical and mathematical skills. Students coming from a foreign education system can also sit it. At the UOC, students who have not passed the PAP can take it during their first four semesters.

If you finished secondary school outside Spain, the usual first step is UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses the academic records of international students and runs the tests needed to enter bachelor's degrees at Spanish universities.

Recognition and careers

Official Spanish degrees are valid throughout Spain; recognition in other countries depends on each country's rules. In the other direction, a teacher with a foreign qualification who wants to work in Spain must apply for homologación, the procedure that gives access to a regulated profession. A declaration of equivalence (declaración de equivalencia) only certifies the academic level of a qualification (bachelor's or master's).

The main career is teaching in public schools (through competitive exams called oposiciones), state-subsidised schools and private schools. The UOC also mentions adult education, hospital classrooms and publishers of teaching materials.
