The Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue (CEGEP-AT) is a French-language college in western Québec, Canada, with about 2,300 students and three campuses in Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d'Or and Amos. Cégeps are Québec's first level of higher education: two-year pre-university programmes lead to a bachelor's degree at university, and three-year technical programmes lead to employment or to university. Graduates receive the diploma of college studies (DEC), issued by the state.

The college offers 22 programmes. Its technical programmes prepare students for in-demand sectors such as mining, forestry, industry, health and social services, computing and management; international students usually choose these technical programmes, for example:

  • Mineral technology, civil engineering technology, industrial maintenance, electrical engineering technology
  • Nursing, pre-hospital emergency care, pharmacy technician, forestry technology
  • Early childhood education, special education, criminology intervention, social work
  • Computer science and business administration

International applicants need the equivalent of a secondary school diploma and must usually prove French at level C1, plus financial means. French nationals are exempt from tuition fees under a France-Québec agreement. Student residences are available on campus in Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d'Or and Amos.

Technical programmes (DEC, 3 years) open to international students:

  • Physical technologies: industrial maintenance (mechanical), electrical engineering technology (automation and control), mineral technology, civil engineering technology
  • Human services: criminology intervention, early childhood education, special education, social work

Admission Requirements

International applicants apply through the SRAM (application fee CAD 85). They need the equivalent of a Québec secondary school diploma (completion of the 11th year of schooling or the French baccalauréat) and must meet each programme's prerequisites, for example physical sciences for nursing or mathematics for computer science and engineering technologies. Most applicants must take a French test (level C1 required) and prove financial means of CAD 24,617; French nationals are generally exempt from both. After admission, students apply for the Québec acceptance certificate (CAQ, CAD 135) and a study permit (CAD 150); the whole process can take up to six months.

Language Requirements

Programmes are taught in French. Most international applicants must pass a French test from the list accepted by the SRAM, even if they studied in French; the college requires level C1. French nationals are exempt except in some cases. All students also take an English placement test on admission.
