Laurentian University (Université Laurentienne) is a bilingual university in Sudbury, Ontario, in northern Canada, with its main campus on Ramsey Lake Road. It describes itself as northern, bilingual and tricultural, and states that it was the first bilingual university officially recognised under the French Language Services Act. It offers more than 70 undergraduate programmes in English, French or both, over 30 of them in French, and many include Indigenous content.

International undergraduates with high admission averages can receive academic excellence scholarships of up to $60,000 over their degree. Applicants who are academically admissible but lack the required English score can take the university's English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme. Laurentian also takes part in incoming and outgoing student exchanges. First-year students live in on-campus residences, and upper-year students can move to shared or one-bedroom apartment-style buildings.

Admission Requirements

International undergraduate applicants must meet a minimum grade for their country's secondary school credential, the subject requirements of their programme and the language requirement. Examples of minimum grades listed by the university:

  • Spain: Bachillerato and Selectividad, 6/10
  • Mexico: Bachillerato, 8/10 (80/100)
  • Colombia: Título de Bachiller, 3.5/5 or 8/10
  • Argentina: Bachillerato, 6/10
  • International Baccalaureate: full diploma with at least 24 points

Some programmes need specific senior-level subjects, for example English and two mathematics courses for Architecture.

Language Requirements

Applicants prove proficiency in English or French, depending on the language of their programme. Minimum English scores (valid for two years):

  • IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT: 4.5 overall with 5.0 in writing and speaking from 1 January 2026 (88 for earlier tests)
  • Duolingo: 120, no subscore below 110
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: 176
  • PTE Academic: 60

Alternatively, students can complete Level 3 (CEFR C1) of Laurentian's EAP programme with at least 70%; it has intakes in September, January and May, with 11-week levels. Architecture and Nursing applicants cannot use this route. French-language and bilingual programmes have their own French requirements.

Fees

International undergraduate tuition for the 2026-27 academic year (Canadian dollars, full year):

  • Most programmes (30 credits): $30,363.92
  • Business Administration and Sports Administration: $31,614.00
  • Architecture: $38,844.56
  • Engineering (36 credits): $41,041.60

On top of tuition come incidental and student association fees (about $1,255 a year) and the compulsory University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP), $948 for a single student starting in September 2026.

Financial Aid

International undergraduates receive International Academic Excellence Scholarships based on their admission average:

  • 90-100%: $15,000 in the first year, up to $60,000 in total
  • 80-89.9%: $10,000 in the first year, up to $40,000 in total

The scholarship is renewed each year if the student studies full time and keeps an average above 80%. Graduate students can apply for graduate teaching assistantships.

Housing

Laurentian has on-campus residences, including University College and the Single Student Residence. High school students who apply for residence before 1 June 2026 are guaranteed a place, with the option of a second year. After the first year, students can apply for shared or one-bedroom apartment-style buildings reserved for upper years. Meal plans cover the Great Hall and other campus food outlets, and the university also provides information on off-campus housing.
