MBA Studies in Spain

An MBA (Master in Business Administration) is a postgraduate programme in general management for graduates who usually already have some work experience. Spain has a wide range of MBAs, concentrated in Madrid and Barcelona: public and private universities, international business schools and smaller regional schools offer full-time, part-time, executive and online formats, in English, in Spanish or in both languages.

A typical MBA covers finance and accounting, strategy, marketing, operations, people management and leadership, with electives, case studies and a final project. Many programmes now add digital transformation, data and sustainability.

Official master's degree or school's own qualification

The key point for international students is the type of qualification. In Spain an MBA can be an official master's degree (máster universitario), recorded in the ministry's Register of Universities, Centres and Degrees (RUCT), or a programme that leads to the school's own qualification (título propio). Royal Decree 822/2021 sets official master's degrees at 60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits and treats títulos propios as a separate category. Both can be good programmes, but only the official master's is a Spanish state degree; this matters for doctoral studies, public-sector jobs and recognition abroad.

A RUCT search for "MBA" returns 100 master's records, including discontinued ones. Official MBAs currently listed include those of the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, ESIC Universidad, the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija, the Universidad de Valladolid, the Universidad de Jaén and an MBA in Digital Management at the Universitat Ramon Llull.

The Universidad Carlos III de Madrid gives an example of an official MBA: 60 ECTS credits (44 compulsory, 10 elective and a 6-credit master's thesis), taught in English on its Puerta de Toledo campus in Madrid as an 11-month full-time programme, with 40 places. The university states that its MBA holds AMBA and AACSB accreditation. Business schools run MBAs of different lengths: IESE's MBA in Barcelona, for example, follows a traditional or flexible track of 15 or 19 months and can be taken in Spanish or as a bilingual MBA.

Admission and language

An official master's degree requires a bachelor's degree. Graduates from outside the European Higher Education Area do not need to homologate their degree first: the university checks that it is equivalent to a Spanish bachelor's degree. Schools set their own selection process, and work experience weighs heavily; at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, MBA students have on average more than five years of work experience.

Language is a real choice. Many MBAs are taught in English, others in Spanish, and some offer both, as IESE does with its bilingual MBA. For students from Latin America a Spanish-language MBA in Spain can combine a European qualification with teaching in their own language.

Costs

MBA fees vary far more than other master's fees, and private business schools set their own prices. As a public-university reference, the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid charges €19,800 for its MBA in general and €13,500 for EU nationals. Living costs, insurance and visa costs come on top.

Where to study an MBA in Spain

Madrid has the most schools in our directory, including IE Business School, IESE Business School Madrid, ESIC Business & Marketing School in Pozuelo de Alarcón, ESERP, ESDEN Business School, IMF Business School, Cerem, the Universidad CEU San Pablo and the Universidad Pontificia Comillas. Barcelona follows with IESE Business School, EAE Business School, which offers an MBA in Spanish, an International MBA and executive MBAs, ESEI International Business School, UIBS / Barcelona Business School and La Salle – Universitat Ramon Llull.

Recognition and careers

An official Spanish master's degree is valid throughout Spain. Business administration is not a regulated profession, so a foreign MBA cannot be homologated in Spain; its holder can apply for a declaración de equivalencia to certify the academic level. Graduates usually move into general management, consulting, finance, marketing, operations and entrepreneurship.
