Spanish Language and Culture Studies in Spain

Spanish language and culture programmes combine Spanish classes with the study of Spain itself: its literature, history, art, architecture, cinema, society and business life. They are aimed at international students who want more than a language course, such as study abroad students earning credits for their home university, Erasmus students and adults who want to understand the country they live in.

In Spain these programmes are run mainly by the international or language centres of universities and by private Spanish schools. They are not official degrees. What they give is a certificate from the centre and, in many university programmes, credits that the student's home university may recognise.

How the programmes are organised

There are three common formats:

  • Language and culture courses at university centres, by term or for a full academic year
  • Semester study abroad programmes, where students take subject courses on Spain, often alongside a Spanish course
  • Spanish courses at language schools with a cultural programme or culture workshops added

Estudios Hispánicos of the Universitat de Barcelona offers annual courses in language and culture, with classes in central Barcelona on language, culture, art, business and architecture, and courses for autumn, winter-spring and summer. It also runs a full-time Spanish programme for students who need a study visa, of 580 hours for the 2026-27 year, which includes classes on language, conversation, comprehension and writing and leads to a final certificate and ECTS credits.

At the Universidad de Alcalá, Alcalingua offers courses in Spanish language or in language and culture, and the Instituto Franklin-UAH runs its Study Abroad in Spain programme, created in 1987. In autumn and spring, students take four courses for a total of 12 credits; in summer they can take one or two one-month periods. In Seville, the Centro Universitario Internacional of the Universidad Pablo de Olavide combines semester programmes in multidisciplinary studies with short Spanish courses and a programme in Spanish culture and society.

Private schools usually build culture into their timetable. Escuela Montalbán in Granada, for example, lists a culture workshop and courses on Federico García Lorca and the culture of Al-Andalus, and Instituto Mediterráneo Sol (iNMSOL), also in Granada and teaching Spanish since 1992, offers Hispanic studies courses in literature, history and culture.

The city shapes the cultural side of the programme: schools in Granada teach courses on Al-Andalus, while the Barcelona programmes include art and architecture.

Level, quality and certificates

Classes follow the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Culture courses may be taught in Spanish or in English, so check the language and the level required for each course.

The Instituto Cervantes accredits centres that teach Spanish as a foreign language. Accredited centres pass a thorough evaluation that is repeated every three years. Escuela Montalbán, for example, states that it has been accredited since 2002.

A centre's certificate shows the course completed. For official proof of level, students take the DELE, diplomas awarded by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education, which are valid indefinitely. Estudios Hispánicos of the Universitat de Barcelona is a DELE exam centre and also an exam centre for the CCSE, the test of constitutional and sociocultural knowledge of Spain required for Spanish nationality.

Visa and practical points

Students from outside the EU who stay longer than 90 days need a study visa. The Spanish consulate in London lists "Language Studies of Spanish" among the activities covered, and asks for acceptance at an authorised centre for a full-time study programme. This is why some centres offer specific full-time programmes for visa applicants.
