The Cégep de Chicoutimi is a college (cégep) in Chicoutimi, in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Quebec, Canada. Teaching is in French. Like other Quebec cégeps, it offers two kinds of programmes leading to the diploma of college studies (DEC): two-year pre-university programmes that prepare students for university, and three-year technical programmes that lead directly to employment.

  • Pre-university: natural sciences, social sciences, arts, letters and communication, visual arts, history and civilisation, double DEC
  • Health: nursing, physiotherapy, dental hygiene, respiratory therapy, biomedical laboratory technology, pre-hospital emergency care
  • Engineering technologies: civil, architectural, electrical and metallurgical engineering, forestry
  • Aircraft piloting, computer science, administration and recreation management

The college welcomes international students every year. They apply online through the regional admission service (SRASL) and, unless exempt, must take a French test. Under a France-Québec agreement, French citizens are exempt from international tuition fees, and students from other countries in technical programmes can be invited to apply for an exemption from the additional fees. Two student residences with 215 rooms are connected to the main building by walkways.

Tremplin DEC offers a flexible first term for students still choosing a programme or completing prerequisites.

Admission Requirements

International students apply online to the regional admission service (SRASL) at mesetudesaucanada.com. Each programme has prerequisite courses; admission also depends on the academic record and the number of places. Required documents:

  • Copy of birth certificate
  • School reports for the last three years
  • French test result, if required

The application fee is about €60 or CAD 85 (non-refundable) and complete files take about four weeks. After admission, students start their immigration procedures. All international students are enrolled in the Green Shield Canada health insurance plan. The international office offers webinars and video meetings for applicants.

Language Requirements

All students must show a level of French adequate for college studies. Applicants take a French knowledge test before submitting their other documents, unless they studied at a French-language institution in Canada, hold French or Belgian citizenship, or have already submitted a recognised French test result meeting the minimum score. Everyone else must take the SRASL admission French test, even if they studied in French.

Program Duration

Pre-university programmes last 2 years (4 terms) and technical programmes 3 years (6 terms). A double DEC leads to two DECs in three years. Starting in the winter term adds one term, so a technical DEC then takes about three and a half years (except nursing).

Dates and Deadlines

International applications for the winter 2028 term open from mid-May 2027 to mid-September 2027; the list of programmes open to international students in winter is published later. Residence waiting list for fall 2027 opens on 1 March 2027.

Financial Aid

French citizens (including overseas departments and territories) are exempt from international tuition fees under a France-Québec agreement. Scholarships for international college students go mainly to new students from Francophonie member countries (excluding France) or Algeria in full-time technical programmes; the cégep nominates candidates to the Fédération des cégeps. Full-time international students in technical DEC programmes may also be invited to apply for an exemption from additional tuition fees, assessed on French level, academic path and record. The cégep warns that no scholarship covers all living costs.

Housing

The cégep has two residences with 215 rooms, linked to the main building by walkways, plus a third nearby residence with 52 rooms run with a partner landlord. Rooms have a bed, desk, wardrobe, sink and small fridge; toilets and showers are shared on each floor. Prices for 2026-27 range from CAD 305 per month (single room) to CAD 570 per month (single room with private toilet), plus a mandatory service fee of CAD 180 per year. A CAD 305 deposit is needed to join the waiting list, which opens on 1 March 2027 for the fall 2027 term.
