The Cégep Garneau is a college (cégep) in Québec City, Canada, with around 6,000 students in regular programmes and 2,000 in continuing education. Teaching is in French. Cégeps are the first level of higher education in Quebec: pre-university programmes prepare students for university and technical programmes are designed for the job market (while also giving access to university); both lead to the diploma of college studies (DEC).

  • Pre-university: natural sciences, International Baccalaureate, social sciences, arts, letters and communication
  • Health: nursing, physiotherapy, dental hygiene, optics
  • Police, legal and criminology programmes
  • Computer science, administration, logistics, documentation and interior design

Several programmes can also be started in January, and a Tremplin DEC profile for First Nations students is unique to Garneau. International students apply by invitation: they first complete an interest form and are then guided through the application to the regional admission service (SRACQ). The international students page lists technical DECs in optics, documentation, operations and supply chain management, and computer science. Admitted international students get free help with some immigration procedures, information on life in Québec City and integration activities such as a buddy programme. A private student residence stands directly on campus.

Admission Requirements

International students need an invitation from the Cégep Garneau before applying through the regional admission service (SRACQ). The first step is the online interest form for international students; the international office replies within about 48 working hours. Applicants must meet the general college admission conditions and any programme prerequisites, and the SRACQ application fee is CAD 39 (non-refundable). After admission, students choose their courses, pay registration fees and take an English placement test; admitted international students receive help with some immigration procedures.

Housing

A private student residence stands directly on the Cégep Garneau campus. It offers soundproofed, secure single rooms, heated, lit and furnished, with kitchens and bathrooms shared by only three or four students. Unlimited high-speed internet is included, access is controlled and staff are available 24/7. Places can be booked before the admission decision, conditional on admission. Bookings are made with the residence operator (lebaillairge.ca).
