Université Laval (ULaval) is a French-language research university in Québec City, Canada, with roots going back 350 years; it has educated and graduated more than 350,000 people. It describes itself as a major Canadian research university and a leader in international and French-speaking mobility, and it welcomes many international students, visiting professors and interns every year.
Teaching is in French. ULaval offers bachelor's degrees (1er cycle), master's degrees and doctorates (2e and 3e cycles) in fields such as actuarial science, business administration, agronomy, forestry, anthropology, archaeology, architecture and biochemistry. Its École de langues teaches intensive, regular and distance courses in 11 languages.
Non-French-speaking students can take the French Immersion Pathway, offered in more than 65 programmes in seven faculties: French as a second language classes are built into the bachelor's degree, which then takes 4 to 6 years. The Test de connaissance du français (TCF) is an admission requirement for non-French speakers. ULaval also offers student exchanges, internships, short stays and dual degrees, and four residences on campus.

Master's (2e cycle) and doctoral (3e cycle) programmes. A master's degree in Québec generally takes two years of specialised study after the bachelor's degree. International applicants need a first degree (North American bachelor's, licence or master's depending on the education system) for master's programmes and a second-cycle degree for doctoral programmes. Mobility options include dual degrees and PhD co-supervision.
International applicants to bachelor's programmes need a diploma representing 13 years of schooling, equivalent to Québec's DEC (for example the French baccalauréat, the International Baccalaureate or a GCE with three A levels); ULaval publishes diploma equivalences by country. Holders of a pre-university diploma totalling 12 years of schooling must complete a 30-credit preparatory year. Some programmes have specific prerequisites. Applicants can apply before collecting all documents but must send them before the deadlines, and should also check Québec study permit formalities and the compulsory health insurance. Contact: Bureau du registraire, 418 656-3080.
Programmes are taught in French. Non-French speakers must take the Test de connaissance du français (TCF), which is an admission requirement in all programmes; the score determines how many French as a second language courses the student must take, and applicants without a result are classed as beginners. Through the French Immersion Pathway, students with at least 12 years of pre-university schooling take reduced-fee French courses within their bachelor's degree until they reach the level required by their programme.
Université Laval has four residences on campus, with services such as internet, shared kitchens, laundry, accessible rooms and access to the PEPS sports complex. A new complex of 180 furnished studios and apartments with a student life centre is under construction and is scheduled to open in autumn 2027.
