The Université de Montréal (UdeM) is a French-language university in Montreal, Quebec. With its affiliated schools, HEC Montréal and Polytechnique Montréal, it forms the largest higher education hub in Quebec. UdeM has about 71,000 students, including 10,000 international students, in 13 faculties and schools, and also offers programmes at its Laval and Brossard campuses.
The university offers some 250 undergraduate and 350 graduate programmes. Main fields of study include:
- Health: medicine, pharmacy, nursing, optometry, veterinary medicine, kinesiology, nutrition
- Law, including international and business law
- Pure and applied sciences: biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics
- Social sciences: psychology, criminology, economics, political science, sociology
- Arts and humanities: music, cinema, literature, linguistics, translation, history, philosophy
- Education, architecture, design and urban planning
Applicants must show that their spoken and written French meets the requirements of their programme; since winter 2026 a new French admission requirement applies, which may include a recognised French test. The École de français offers French courses, workshops and language mentoring. International students, except French and francophone Belgian nationals, can receive the UdeM exemption scholarship, which reduces international tuition.

Teaching is in French. Applicants must show that their spoken and written French meets the requirements of the chosen programme, and since winter 2026 UdeM applies a new French admission requirement, which may involve submitting results of a recognised French test; the exact requirement is given in each programme description. Students who have not studied in French can still apply. The École de français of the Faculty of Continuing Education offers online and in-person French courses, workshops and language mentoring.
The UdeM exemption scholarship reduces the tuition normally charged to international students (not available to French or francophone Belgian nationals). Amounts for the 2026-27 academic year, in Canadian dollars:
- Bachelor's: based solely on academic record, level A CA$14,436 or level B CA$6,879.60 per year (30 credits)
- Master's: CA$15,916.05 (research) or CA$11,334.60 (non-research) per year (45 credits)
- Doctorate: full exemption from the international supplement, CA$24,067.80 per year, so students pay the Quebec rate
Holders must have an offer of admission, a valid CAQ and study permit, study full time and have no other external funding.
