About Madrid

Madrid is the capital of Spain and its largest city, with 3,527,924 registered residents on 1 January 2025 according to the city council's municipal register (padrón). It is also the capital of the Comunidad de Madrid region, in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula. For students, Madrid combines a very wide choice of schools with the services of a large capital: national institutions, company headquarters, embassies, museums and an international population.

Students choose Madrid for the range of options in one place, from Spanish courses of a few weeks to full degrees, vocational training and graduate programmes in business, finance and law. The city is also a central hub for travel in Spain, which makes weekend trips to other regions easy.

Studying in Madrid

Our directory lists 191 active schools in Madrid: 71 universities and other higher-education centres, 31 language schools, 46 vocational and professional schools (FP and specialised training), 29 primary and secondary schools and 5 online and distance-learning providers. The higher-education side includes private universities such as CUNEF Universidad, university centres affiliated to public universities, such as CES Don Bosco (affiliated to the Universidad Complutense de Madrid), and specialised institutions such as CEMFI, a graduate centre for economics and finance created by the Banco de España. CIS University, founded in 1981, is an American university in Madrid whose students can complete a US bachelor's degree. Madrid also has authorised higher music schools, such as the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska and the Centro Superior Música Creativa.

Business administration, marketing, finance, law, communications and international relations are among the most common subjects in our Madrid listings. Most university degrees are taught in Spanish, but several private institutions and graduate schools offer programmes in English, so check the language of instruction for each programme. Families moving with children will find international schools as well, such as the American School of Madrid, which has taught students of all nationalities since 1961.

Learning Spanish in Madrid

Madrid is a common choice for Spanish courses, with schools that teach all year round. Several language schools in the city are accredited by the Instituto Cervantes, among them Academia EUREKA, which has offered courses since 1988 and is an authorised SIELE exam centre, and Academia Contacto, teaching since 2001. Typical options include:

  • intensive group courses in the morning or afternoon
  • evening and part-time courses
  • DELE and SIELE exam preparation
  • one-to-one lessons
  • homestay or shared-flat accommodation arranged by the school

Cost of living for students

Rent is the largest expense for most students, and rooms in central districts cost noticeably more than in outer neighbourhoods; ask your school about student residences, homestays or shared flats, because they often help with housing. Public transport, on the other hand, is cheap for young people. In 2026 the Abono Joven, for anyone from age 15 until their 26th birthday, costs €10 for 30 days of unlimited travel on public transport across all fare zones (A to E2), according to the Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid (CRTM). These discounts apply until 31 December 2026. Students aged 26 or over pay €32.70 for a monthly zone A pass, and a 10-trip ticket for Metro and EMT buses costs €7.30.

Getting around and daily life

The Metro, EMT buses and Cercanías trains cover the whole city, and most central districts are easy to explore on foot. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport is connected to the city by Metro line 8: the trip from Nuevos Ministerios to Terminal 4 takes 18 minutes, according to Aena, and a €3 airport supplement applies to single and 10-trip Metro tickets. High-speed AVE trains leave from Madrid Puerta de Atocha - Almudena Grandes; Renfe direct trains reach Barcelona in 2 hours 30 minutes.

Madrid has a continental climate with cold winters and hot, dry summers. At the AEMET Madrid Retiro station (normals for 1981-2010), the average temperature is 6.3 °C in January and 25.6 °C in July, when average daily highs reach 32.1 °C. Bring warm clothes for winter and plan for heat if you take a summer course.
