About Estepona
Estepona is a coastal town on the Costa del Sol, in the province of Málaga in Andalusia, southern Spain, with 79,621 registered residents on 1 January 2025, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). It lies at the western end of the stretch of coast that runs from Málaga through Marbella, about 20 minutes by car from Marbella.
For international families, Estepona is mainly a place for school-age children rather than for higher education. Its schools follow British, Swedish and American curricula, and several teach in English or Swedish with Spanish as a daily subject. Our directory lists no university in Estepona.
Studying in Estepona
Our directory lists 4 active schools in Estepona, all of them international and private schools. They cover different curricula and age ranges:
- The International School Estepona, a British primary school and nursery in El Paraíso for children aged 2 to 12, founded in 2004, accredited by NABSS (the National Association of British Schools in Spain) and licensed by the Junta de Andalucía
- Queens British Grammar School, a small British school in the town centre that teaches the English national curriculum in English to pupils up to 16 and prepares them for the IGCSE; Spanish is compulsory, and children with little English start in an intensive English class
- Swedish International School, open since 2023, which follows the Swedish curriculum with extra Spanish and English, has a maximum of 16 pupils per class and teaches from age 3 to year 6, with secondary and upper-secondary studies through the Swedish partners Sofia Distans and Hermods
- Atlas American School of Málaga, in Selwo Hills, which follows the American curriculum from preschool (age 3) to grade 12 and is an IB World School authorised to offer the Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12
Accreditation matters when you choose. Under Spanish law, American schools in Spain must be accredited by one of the four regional accrediting organisations in the United States, and Atlas ASM is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The Swedish International School states that it is authorised and supervised by the Junta de Andalucía and authorised by Skolverket, the Swedish education agency, for supplementary Swedish teaching. For later university entry in Spain, Atlas ASM explains that its students can enter with the High School Diploma once the last two years are validated, an administrative process the school handles, or with the IB Diploma.
Cost of living for families
School fees are the main education cost and vary widely by school and age. At The International School Estepona, fees are paid three times a year: according to its January 2026 fee list, the registration fee is €1,050 and a full-day place costs €2,695 per term for ages 4 to 6 and €3,150 per term for ages 7 to 12. At the Swedish International School, the 2026-27 fees are €4,000 per term or €7,400 for a full year in preschool, and €4,600 per term or €8,600 for a full year in primary school, with a 20% discount for a third child. Housing is the other large cost; we did not find an official source for rents in Estepona.
Local buses are inexpensive. On Estepona's urban bus service, run by Avanza, a single ticket costs €1.20, or €0.70 per trip with the rechargeable Avanza Costa del Sol card, which also gives a 40% discount on most interurban lines.
Getting around and daily life
The town centre and the seafront are compact, while many families live in residential developments to the east and west. The city council is preparing a new ten-year urban bus contract with three lines (Centre, West and East) and new hybrid buses, according to a council announcement of 22 September 2026. The nearest international airport is Málaga-Costa del Sol, and Avanza runs a direct bus line between the airport and Estepona.
The climate is mild in winter and hot and dry in summer. AEMET's climate normals for Málaga Airport, further east on the same coast (1981-2010), give an average temperature of 12.1 °C in January and 25.5 °C in July, when average daily highs reach 30.5 °C, with about 534 mm of rain and 2,905 hours of sunshine a year.
