Psychology

Psychology is a science of human behaviour, incorporating a vast range of methods and topics, from cultural influences to brain function. The SLU-Madrid psychology course offers a four-year inclusive foundation in psychology, in an intercontinental setting that promotes both inter-cultural knowledge and understanding. The program provides extensive and viable opportunities for pupils to become articulate in both Spanish and English via academic study, bilingual clinical practice and cultural experiences. As a psychology major at SLU-Madrid, students will be part of a program that prepares them for careers and graduate school in psychology and other disciplines. SLU-Madrid psychology majors profit from low class numbers, strong mentoring by faculty and a unique multilingual and multicultural emphasis in all courses.

Social psychology investigates the interpersonal processes in which are embodied emotional and behavioural issues. Bircham University’s Social Psychology program examines psychological difficulties from social psychological perspectives. Psychology Studies in Spain

Psychology in Spain is taught mainly at universities, as a four-year bachelor's degree (grado). Students who want to work in health care then add a regulated master's degree or the national clinical training programme. Public and private universities across the country offer the grado, several online universities teach it at a distance, and most teaching is in Spanish.

How the degree is organised

The grado en Psicología is an official bachelor's degree of 240 ECTS credits over four years. The Universidad de Sevilla, for example, lists its degree as 240 credits and four years, and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) teaches the same 240-credit structure online, including 12 ECTS of work placements and a final project. The first years cover research methods, psychobiology, developmental and social psychology, perception, memory and learning. Later years add psychological assessment, psychopathology, intervention techniques and options in clinical, educational or organisational psychology.

A bachelor's degree alone does not qualify a graduate to practise as a health psychologist. Two regulated routes exist:

  • Máster Universitario en Psicología General Sanitaria: a 90 ECTS master's degree that qualifies for the regulated profession of general health psychologist (psicólogo general sanitario)
  • PIR (Psicólogo Interno Residente): a national exam and postgraduate training under the Ministry of Health, the route to work as a clinical psychologist

According to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, general health psychologists promote health and prevent illness, but not in the public health system or in publicly funded (concertado) centres. At the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the master's degree lasts one and a half years (90 ECTS), and the university names private clinical practice as its main career outlet.

Admission and language

International students with school qualifications from outside Spain usually apply through UNEDasiss, the UNED service that assesses international students' records and runs the tests needed to enter bachelor's degrees at Spanish universities. The application for a place is then made to each university within its own deadlines. Places are limited: the Universidad de Sevilla offered 270 places in 2025-26 and received 1,102 first-choice applications.

Most degrees are taught in Spanish, so good academic Spanish is needed from the first year; the UOC also offers its degree in Catalan. For the general health psychology master's at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, non-Spanish-speaking applicants must show Spanish at level B2.

Fees at public universities are charged per credit. The Universidad de Sevilla charges €12.62 per credit for the bachelor's degree. At the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the general health psychology master's costs about €1,861.20 for a first enrolment, or €15,229 for non-EU students who are not resident in Spain.

Where to study Psychology in Spain

Madrid and Barcelona have the most schools in our directory, followed by Granada, Zaragoza and Seville. Public universities with psychology programmes include the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), whose Facultat de Psicologia i de Logopèdia is in Bellaterra, the Universidad de Granada, the Universidad de Sevilla and the Universidad de Salamanca. Private options include the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, the Universidad de Deusto in Bilbao and the Blanquerna faculty of Universitat Ramon Llull in Barcelona.

The UOC, UDIMA - Universidad a Distancia de Madrid and the Universidad Internacional Isabel I de Castilla teach online. For qualified psychologists, Granada has specialised training centres such as the Instituto Superior de Psicología ALBORAN, and Fundación OMIE in Bilbao offers postgraduate training in psychotherapy.

Recognition of the qualification

An official Spanish grado is valid throughout Spain. Holders of a foreign degree who want to work as general health psychologists in Spain apply for homologation to the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, online through universidades.sede.gob.es. The ministry requires a bachelor's and official master's degree in psychology, or an integrated degree, of at least 300 ECTS and at least five years of full-time study, plus Spanish at level B2 for applicants from countries where Spanish is not an official language. Holders of qualifications from the European Economic Area can instead ask the Ministry of Health for professional recognition under Directive 2005/36/EC. The clinical route requires recognition of the degree, the PIR exam and training, and Spanish at level C1.

Careers

The Universidad de Granada lists hospitals and health centres, schools, companies, prisons, research centres, social and legal services and NGOs among the places where psychologists work. Common roles include legal psychology, human resources (consulting, recruitment and training), careers guidance, research, psychometrics, addiction services and clinical psychology through the PIR.
