Music Studies in The United States

The University of Michigan has one of the top music schools in the United States.

Of all the different forms of art, music is the most enjoyable art that any person can take part, be it singing, playing an instrument, or simply listening. Those that pursue a music degree in higher learning are very talented and committed individuals. Most music programs are very selective, somewhat small, and have many prerequisites. For those really passionate about music, a degree in this art can be very rewarding and enjoyable and the best place to pursue such as degree is in the United States.

Studying music in the US

The US offers a number of degrees in the music program. These provide a number of options for students to choose from. Most music learning institutions will offer some of these degree options: Bachelor of Music Education, B.M.E, Bachelor of Science, B.S, Bachelor of Arts, B.A, Bachelor of Fine Arts, B.F.A, and Bachelor of Music, B.M among others.

The most common degree in the US is the Bachelor of Music and it takes a total of four years to complete. The different specializations include music technology, jazz studies, performance, church music, music production, composition, theory, and history. A Bachelor of Fine Arts is completed in four or more years and its specializations are in dance and musical theatre.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program is completed in four years and it is a combination of music courses and other art courses such as history, literature, science, and math. This degree program is different from the Bachelor of Music (BM) and Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) programs because it does not need auditions and sophomore assessment. It also does not need a recital requirement to proceed with the program. BFA and BM programs are based on musical theory and they need as ensemble participation.

A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree is normally offered to students who wish to attain a degree not only in Music but in another field as well outside the music program. The Bachelor of Music Education (BME) degree is pursued by students who want to teach music from elementary school to high school. This integrates music with education courses.

Studying music in the US gives students the opportunity to pursue further education once they attain their undergraduate degrees. Some of the graduate programs students can pursue include Master of Education (MME), Master of Music (MM), and Master of Arts (MA) among others. Students can decide to specialize in a number of fields, for instance, conducting, musicology, arranging, accompanying, or ethnomusicology just to mention a few.

Those wishing to pursue a career as a music professor at the university, they must have a Doctor or PhD in Musical Arts (DMA) degree.

All these programs are offered to all students both local and international. There are many other musical programs offered in different institutions in the United States and students, especially international students are advised to consider the area they would want to live in, and the different programs available in their field of interest before settling on a course and a university or college.
