Psychology Studies in The United States

Stanford University has one of the top psychology programs in the US.

Psychology is indeed a very interesting subject as it enables students to push themselves to greater self-awareness. It also helps people understand their personalities and actions better. It is this phenomenon that has attracted students both local and international to pursue the course in the United States.

Studying Psychology in the US

Universities in the United States offer different programs for psychology courses. No requirements are needed when applying for bachelors’ degrees in psychology. These degrees offer learners fundamental introduction to psychology’s principles. They also give students an opportunity to pursue more advances courses in different subfields and experience in research.

To pursue a graduate course in psychology in the country, a student needs to have a bachelor’s degree in psychology. International students will need to have the equivalence of an American Bachelor’s degree from their country of study. Some universities may only ask for coursework in basic psychology with courses in mathematics, statistics, social, biological, and physical sciences so as to enroll in the graduate program.

For a doctorate degree, most universities require an applicant to have an American Master’s degree or its equivalent. The majority of the universities will also a need a student to take an IELTS or TOEFL exam and a GRE exam (for international students). This requirement varies from one school to the other and it is normally country-specific depending on if English is the formal language used in teaching or not. A student may also be required to provide personal essays and reference letters during the application process. Appropriate work experience makes a stronger admission application. Students are also advised to look for a well-known third-party credentials assessor to interpret their scores and test sheets. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), the most important criteria for gaining admittance into a psychology doctorate program in the US are research, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and research experience.

Despite the degree earned in psychology, all students are expected to do an internship for one year before they are qualified to practice psychology in the country. These post-doctoral internships are normally accredited by the APA.

In most states in the US, a master’s degree alone is not enough for one to practice as a licensed psychologist. Students with a master’s in psychology can be licensed as counselors and practice psychology under the guidance of a psychologist who is already licensed, or work in other psychology-associated positions. At the doctorate level, students can decide to start their own counseling practice, teach at the university, or carry out their own research.

There are a number of competent learning institutions in every state in the US that offer good quality psychology programs with different specialties. The education system in the country encourages students to take part in hands-on research and prompts growth and personal thinking. Colleges and universities in the country also encourage an all-round learning environment for all learners. There are learning institutions to accommodate all budgets and preferences for different students and some also provide financial aid to students thus making it possible for students, even international students to pursue their education in the US.
